The 14th International Conference of Demotic Studies is postponed by another year to 2022 because of the continuing risks and uncertainties associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

After a long and intensive assessment of the situation and thorough internal discussion, we have heavy-heartedly decided to postpone the 14th International Conference of Demotic Studies by one year to August 30 to September 3, 2021 because of the continuing risks and uncertainties associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

We dedicate this conference to the great Demotist Wilhelm Spiegelberg in order to honor his outstanding achievements in the field of Demotic Studies and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his call to the Egyptological Institute of the University of Heidelberg. Furthermore, we will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Heidelberg Egyptological Institute that wasfounded in 1910 under the chair of Hermann Ranke.
Wilhelm Spiegelberg, who habilitated at the University of Strasbourg in 1894 and became the head of the Egyptological Institute in 1907, had to resign from his office and leave Strasbourg due to the French occupation of Alsace-Lorraine and the conclusion of the Treaty of Versailles. He moved to Heidelberg and from 1920 to 1923 was affiliated to the Egyptological Institute as honorary professor under the chair of Herman Ranke. During his time at the Egyptological Institute in Heidelberg, Wilhelm Spiegelberg completed his Coptic Dictionary (1921), published numerous Demotic texts, such as the "Demotische Papyri aus den badischen Papyrussammlungen" (1923) and also developed and wrote a large part of his Demotic Grammar (1925), which went far beyond the "Grammaire démotique" published by Heinrich Karl Brugsch in 1855 and rightfully made Wilhelm Spiegelberg the new founder of Demotic Studies.

Dear colleagues,
with this second circular, we are pleased to provide you with further information on the 14th International Conference of Demotic Studies and thank all those who have already submitted abstracts.
As already announced in the first circular, the conference will open on Monday, 31 August 2020 at 5 pm with a keynote speech and a subsequent reception and will end on Friday, 04 September 2020 at 1 pm. From Tuesday morning to Friday noon, the conference talks will take place at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. On the evening of Thursday, September 03, 2020, the conference dinner will be held at the Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg. Throughout the week, conference participants will have the opportunity to visit the permanent exhibition "Ägypten – Land der Unsterblichkeit" and the special exhibition "Tutanchamun – Sein Grab und die Schätze" in the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim free of charge.
Please register for the conference until 30 June 2020 via our conference website (www.uni-heidelberg.de/aegyptologie/icds2020.html). ). The registration fee as an early bird is 150€ (students: 100€) until 30 April 2020 and afterward 180€ (students: 130€). In addition to the participation in the conference, the fee includes the evening reception on Monday, a guided tour in Heidelberg on Wednesday as well as the admission to the above-mentioned exhibitions of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim. A discounted ticket for the Heidelberg mountain railway with entrance to the castle on Wednesday and the conference dinner at the Kulturbrauerei on Thursday can be booked in addition.
The deadline for the submission of abstracts for conference talks and posters is still 29 February 2020, where we kindly ask you to use the template found on the conference website and submit the abstract in the form of a pdf via our conference platform. We would also like to ask the authors of abstracts already sent to us to upload them to the conference platform for the compilation of the program booklet.
It is possible to book accommodation in Heidelberg via our conference website until 30 July 2020. Here, you can also find a link to the website of the Heidelberg-Card, which offers discounts on the city's cultural offerings as well as free travel on public transport.
