“All My Experiences in Heidelberg Were Highly Positive”
Prof. Dr. Elena Fernandez, Computer Scientist at Department of Statistics and Operations Research at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona
From September 2008 to July 2009 Research Stay at the Institute for Computer Science, followed by annual research stays
When, how long and in what position did you stay at Heidelberg University?
I first came to Heidelberg University in September 2008 when I spent my sabbatical here and stayed for 11 months.
Why did you decide to come to Heidelberg University?
It was mainly a combination of two factors. On the one hand the Discrete and Combinatorial Optimization Group, Chaired by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Reinelt, was the perfect environment for my professional research activities. On the other hand, the size of the city and the fact that there is an international school was also perfect for my 14 year old daughter.
What were your experiences in Heidelberg?
All my experiences in Heidelberg were highly positive. From a professional point of view I was received by the group with the most welcoming attitude. Everyone did their best to provide me with the most comfortable setting. I thus found a perfect atmosphere to carry out my research activities. From a personal point of view I had the opportunity of living in a charming city where people were extremely friendly. Visiting the Neuenheim market on Saturdays became a routine which I loved!
How did your career continue after your time in Heidelberg?
After my sabbatical in Heidelberg I returned to my position in Barcelona. However I have continued my collaboration with the group and, in particular, with Prof. Dr. Reinelt. I have participated in some courses and we have active research projects. This means that I return to Heidelberg every year. Some years I can only come for 1-2 weeks, but other years I am lucky and come back for longer periods or more than once. Indeed I plan to continue to do so!
Do you recommend a research visit to Heidelberg University to your students or to colleagues in your scientific network?
Indeed! In fact, during my sabbatical in Heidelberg some of my colleagues in Barcelona and some doctoral students visited Heidelberg University. This was very fruitful because the initial collaboration further extended to other members of our respective groups. As a result, some of my students also visit the Discrete and Combinatorial Optimization Group in Heidelberg University.
How do you rate the opportunities offered by Heidelberg Alumni International and the Research Alumni Network?
As explained I think that Heidelberg University provides a perfect environment for academic and scientific activities in the most welcoming atmosphere. Therefore, the opportunities offered by Heidelberg Alumni International and the Research Alumni Network are excellent and I cannot imagine a better way of promoting such type of joint and fruitful collaboration.
