G. Verdi: Messa da Requiem
Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem is one of the monumental works of classical music that inspires with its emotional intensity and tonal opulence. The composition, often referred to as Verdi's ‘greatest opera without a stage’, captivates audiences all over the world.
Verdi wrote the Requiem in memory of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, whose death in 1873 deeply moved him. The premiere took place a year later, on 22 May 1874, in the church of San Marco in Milan and was conducted by Verdi himself. The work, which is divided into seven parts, combines elements of the Catholic liturgy with Verdi's unmistakable dramatic musical language. The ‘Dies irae’ in particular, with its thunderous drumbeats and powerful chorus, is a highlight that impressively conveys the fear and awe of the Last Judgement.
To this day, Verdi's Requiem is one of the most impressive settings of the liturgical text and touches the listener with its mixture of personal grief, religious seriousness and theatrical effect.
