LERU Doctoral Summer School 2022 “The University of the Future”

Dear Doctoral Candidates,

We would like to remind you about the opportunity to apply for participation in this year’s LERU Doctoral Summer School. We have extended the application deadline until March 22, 2022.

The 12th LERU Doctoral Summer School will be held at the University of Utrecht, in Utrecht, Netherlands from July 2 - 8, 2022. The theme for this year’s summer school will be “The University of the Future. Rethinking the role of universities worldwide in the face of the challenges of the 21st century”. The summer school will be held on site and will revert to an online format only if in-person participation becomes impossible.

The organizing team of this year’s summer school has developed a stimulating program to explore, using ‘techniques of futuring’, the role that universities play in co-shaping the future, the challenges faced in this process and what the university of the future could look like.  The participants will work together during the summer school to create a manifest on the university of the future, which will be presented on the final day.

The summer school is aimed at doctoral candidates at an advanced stage of their training who are strongly motivated in rethinking the role of universities globally. Candidates must be available for the entire duration of the summer school and must be prepared to take part in all activities. All sessions and activities will be held in English.

Participants will receive a reading list ahead of time and will be required to take part in an online, preparatory training session on the afternoon of June 29.

The summer school program is available in the attachment.

As a member of LERU, Heidelberg University can send 1 or 2 doctoral candidates to the summer school. The Graduate Academy will select the final participants from the group of candidates.

Interested doctoral candidates should send their applications by email to the Graduate Academy (graduateacademy@uni-heidelberg.de) at the latest by March 22, 2022. The application must consist of the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae and motivation letter including a short description of the doctoral project (in English)
  • Letter of recommendation from the doctoral supervisor (in English)

The application should not be longer than 4 pages.

Participation in the summer school will be supported by the Graduate Academy with a travel grant to cover the participation fee (including course materials, accommodations for six nights, meals at social occasions and a social program). Participants will be responsible for their own travel to and from the summer school as well as travel around Utrecht, meals outside the program, and private social activities.

Best regards,

The Team of the Graduate Academy
