Newsletter 17/ 21.04.2016
+++ Freie Plätze +++ Seminarprogramm April/Mai 2016!
English version below
>> Scientific Writing for Natural and Life Sciences (28./29.04.2016, 09:00–17:00)
Scientific Writing is an important skill for all academic careers. In order to be effective, research proposals, reports and publications must be informative, precisely formulated and well structured. The writing process includes several different tasks such as developing a proposal, effective dealing with literature, and composing and revising drafts in order to arrive at a final text. Please note: This is not a language course.
>> Good Scientific Practice: Introduction (09.05.2016, 09:00–13:00)
Serious cases of scientific misconduct have been reported recently in the media. But beside the most prominent cases several shades of questionable scientific practice might undermine the integrity of the sciences. In this introductory workshop you will gain a general understanding of good scientific practice and scientific misconduct (e.g. plagiarism, fabrication, falsification). We will explore key areas of conflict, critical situations and possible causes of misconduct. Questions regarding data management, documentation and ownership will be addressed, as well as the correct use of references and problem areas in the publication process.
>> Potenzialanalyse: Standort bestimmen – berufliche Optionen entwickeln (11./12.05.2016, 09:00–17:00)
>> Academic Discussion Skills (12. & 19.05.2016, 09:00–16:00)
When attending international conferences, you have to be able to defend your research convincingly in the Q&A session after your presentation and network effectively at conference get-togethers. The objective of this workshop is to enhance your English speaking skills for situations of this kind. Participants will leave the workshop with a bank of useful English expressions ready to use.
>> Writing Grant Proposals (17.05.2016, 14:00–18:00)
Writing grant proposals is a demanding task because evaluation committees expect clear and concise texts. In addition, grant proposals differ in structure and style from other forms of academic writing. The workshop includes lectures and exercises. In the exercises, participants draft components of their own proposals.
>> Publishing Papers in the Natural Sciences (GSP 2) (18.05.2016, 09:00–16:30)
Publishing papers in academic journals is a demanding task that is at times rewarding and at times frustrating. As publishing is a prerequisite for a career in science, it is important to approach the topic strategically. The objectives of this course are: (1) to understand the publication process in peer-reviewed journals, (2) to learn about ethical standards and legal regulations, and (3) to develop individual publishing strategies.
