Field of Focus III - Funded Projects Digitising Heritage – An International Workshop

Project leader

Dr. Carsten Wergin
Dr. Stefanie Affeldt

The international workshop Digitising Heritage brought together scientists from Germany, Australia, Austria, Norway, and the Netherlands. One focus of the intensive discussions was the question of how digital technologies can advance interdisciplinary cultural heritage research and facilitate high-profile debate on cultural heritage and the protection of cultural assets. Ethical questions regarding networking were examined as well as the legal basis of digitisation and the presentation of cultural heritage in public space. With regard to Australia as a regional focus of the workshop, this is closely linked to the question of the preservation and determination of places of remembrance and their environment. The digital preservation and documentation of cultural heritage provides new possibilities for this; these were addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective, including ethnological and historical approaches as well as questions of migration, mobility, and repatriation.
