Course Content

Students of the Master’s degree programme in Byzantine Archaeology and Art History gain advanced knowledge of building research and settlement archaeology, visual culture, theory and research history. Where the Master’s degree programme in Byzantine Archaeology and Art History is studied as a major subject, successful graduates are able to pursue doctoral studies in the subject area.

It is mandatory to choose a minor in combination with this Master programme. For further information please refer to the Examination Rules and Regulations.

Course Structure

Where it is studied as a major subject, Byzantine Archaeology and Art History consists in multiple modules;  

  • Specialised module A1 (first semester): Building Research and Settlement Archaeology 
  • Specialised Module A2 (first and second semester): Visual Culture 
  • Module A3 or A4 or module A5 in another subject (second and third semester): Cultural history or theory and research history, or interdisciplinary studies 
  • Module A6 in another subject area (third semester): Archaeological dig or work placement in a museum, Greek or Latin 
  • Practical module A7 (third semester): Field trip 
  • Final module A8, A9 and A10: Colloquium, Master’s thesis, oral examination
