Innovation Fund FRONTIER
The Innovation Fund FRONTIER established in accordance with Heidelberg University’s Institutional Strategy provides funding for small to medium-size projects that are characterised by outstanding scientific quality and high innovative potential. The Innovation Fund focuses on high-risk, but promising research projects in new fields that have little or no chance of receiving funding through established institutions. Such research may consist of excellent projects within a subject, but also of interdisciplinary networks. The Innovation Fund aims at advancing the funded projects to such a degree that they become eligible for continued funding through another programme.
The FRONTIER fund reaches people throughout the university like no other measure of the Institutional Strategy. In the ten application rounds since the beginning of the Excellence Initiative in 2007, more than 1000 proposals from all faculties were submitted, over two-thirds of them by junior scientists. The Rector’s Office and an evaluation committee (Frontier Commission) review the applications and approve funding. Until now, 185 projects have been selected for funding in this intra-university competition.
