FAQ on Teaching
1. I cannot or could not attend a meeting. Do I have to cancel or apologise?
No. You are studying independently, so it is at your own discretion and responsibility whether and when to attend meetings (even though I am of course of the opinion that you will benefit from attending). Please note, though, that credit points are also provided for attendance as part of the degree programme. It is also at your discretion and your responsibility to prepare or follow up content independently and to obtain information and material from the sessions (see question 2).

2. Can you please let me know what was/will be discussed in a session, send me texts or other material by e-mail, register or deregister me from an examination?
No. As much as I would like to help you here, unfortunately I don't have the time. Please contact your fellow students, find out on Moodle and ask our Student Advisory Service, the Examinations Office or the HeiCo scouts in case of illness, registration or examination modalities. If you have such questions, you can also contact advanced students, especially in the student council consultation hour (on Tuesdays between 2 pm and 4 pm in the student council room, number 116), which is designed precisely for this purpose. 3. Can you supervise my BA or MA thesis?
I am happy to supervise theses up to the limit of my capacity. To begin, please familiarise yourself with the regulations for theses and schedule an appointment (see question 9 for details). Note that you also need to find a second supervisor/examiner who is not a professor.

4. I have missed a deadline. What do I do now? (See also questions 1 and 5)
In some courses, you must complete tasks regularly and on time in order to receive credit points for participation. If you miss these assignments more than twice per semester or hand them in late, I will unfortunately not be able to award you the credit points.
It is possible to extend the submission deadlines for e.g. essays, term papers, bachelor's and master's theses or to deregister from the examination so that it is not counted as a failed attempt. However, this is only possible with a valid reason (i.e. unforeseen events that prevent the work from being completed) or illness. Otherwise, a hand-in after the deadline cannot be recognised. For both the extension and the cancellation, you must submit proof of illness with a medical certificate (with details of matriculation number, course name and name of the teacher) or a written justification and proof of the valid reason to the Examination Board of the Department of Philosophy within four working days (including the day of submission). More detailed information on deadline extensions and cancellation can be found here: www.uni-heidelberg.de/fakultaeten/philosophie/philsem/studienberatung/regelungen_zum_pruefungsverfahren.html

5. I got special permissions for exams or need an extension or other special arrangement due to illness or disability.
If you are ill, please contact the Student Advisory Service (see also question 4). If you have special permissions for examination modalities, please contact me in good time by e-mail or in person.

6. What is your view on the use of LLMs such as ChatGPT in written work?
The Philosophy Department generally only permits the use of the above-mentioned tools if the lecturers explicitly authorise this in writing. The exact nature of such an exception is set out in the Philosophy Department's declaration of independence. If AI is used without permission, it is considered an unauthorised aid, which may result in the corresponding work being assessed with a 5.0.
Personally, I would like to point out that, in my experience, AI-supported tools are not (yet) suitable for philosophical writing. This is because they produce texts with incorrect content and fragile arguments. Of course, it is easier to use ChatGPT or a similar service, especially for simple things like text summaries; however, you will then not learn to understand the text on your own, which in turn is a precondition for more demanding skills such as philosophical argumentation and writing. So the use of AI is supposedly helpful in the short term and harmful in the long term.

7. English or German?
English is the lingua franca of international top-level research, not only in philosophy. If you are interested in it, I recommend that you acquire appropriate English language skills as early as possible, even if you find English more difficult than German in the beginning. My courses are designed to encourage and help students to do this (see also below for a list of useful online services). However, I also teach in German if students wish. If the seminar language is German, we will also read original German texts in this language. For texts in all other languages, there will be an English or German translation. Term papers, essays and other written assignments can be done in English or German, regardless of the language of the seminar.

8. I would like to write a term paper. How do I go about it?
Term papers must be written regularly during the term break; deadlines are 31 March in winter semester and 30 September in summer semester. You will receive information about the term papers in the last session of the semester. You will also receive a list of possible topics from which you can choose one. You then write your paper, removing any information that could identify you, and hand it in anonymously with a personally customised code. I will then publish a list of the codes along with the grades on Moodle.
