Erwin Rohde Vorlesungen
Erwin Rohde war von 1886 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1898 Professor für Klassische Philologie in Heidelberg. In der Kontroverse, welche Die Geburt der Tragödie auslöste, unterstützte er Nietzsches Aufruf zu einer Neuausrichtung der Altertumswissenschaften. Rohdes Werk Der griechische Roman und seine Vorläufer (1876) ebnete den Weg für die Erforschung des kaiserzeitlichen Romans und der zweiten Sophistik; seine zweibändige Untersuchung antiker Vorstellungen von Seele und Unsterblichkeit, Psyche (1890-1894), wurde ein Klassiker der Religionsgeschichte. Nach Erwin Rohde ist die Vorlesungsreihe benannt, zu der von 2022 an jeweils im Sommersemester ein Gast an das Seminar für Klassische Philologie eingeladen wird.

Prof. Alex Purves (UCLA)
Prof. Alex Purves ist Chair des Classics Department von UCLA. In ihren Arbeiten hat sie neue Zugänge zur griechischen Literatur vor allem der Archaik und Klassik gelegt. Sie ist die Autorin von Space and Time in Ancient Greek Narrative (Cambridge UP 2010) sowie Homer and the Poetics of Gesture (Oxford UP 2019) und die (Mit-)Herausgeberin von Synaesthesia and the Ancient Senses (Routledge 2013) und Touch and the Ancient Senses (Routledge 2018).
Blue Homer: Reading the Sea in and Beyond the Odyssey
These lectures will examine the Iliad, Odyssey, and related texts from various marine perspectives, including underwater, from the shoreline, and from the surface of the sea. They consider how thinking through the medium of water opens up various poetic and narrative possibilities for epic, and propose ways in which the reception of the Odyssey might be reframed through an aquatic medium.

Prof. Dr. Felix Budelmann (Groningen)
Die ersten Erwin-Rohde-Vorlesungen hält Prof. Dr. Felix Budelmann. Nach Stationen in Manchester (1998-2001), an der Open University (2003-2008) sowie am Magdalen College in Oxford (2008-2021) lehrt Prof. Budelmann seit 2021 an der Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind neben der frühgriechischen Lyrik und der attischen Tragödie kognitionswissenschaftliche Ansätze. Zu seinen Publikationen zählen: The Language of Sophocles (2000); The Cambridge Companion to Greek Lyric (ed. 2009); Greek Lyric. A Selection (ed. 2018).
Being human in time – temporal flow and the present in Greek literature
The present and the flow of time are fundamental to human existence. The moving ‘now’ has challenged philosophers, but is taken for granted in day-to-day experience. The lectures explore aspects of how this ‘now’ is represented in ancient Greek literature of different periods and ask whether there are differences between the sense of a ‘now’ that comes across in those texts and our own intuitions.
