Research focus
The main fields of research of the professorship for history of the late Middle Ages include history of art and mentality (history of bodies, heresy, cultural contacts of Europe and East Asia), material culture of the Middle Ages and the early modern era, epigraphy especially in Alpine region, the history of Italy (with a focus on Venice and Rome) and the reception of the Middle Ages in modern times.
Current book project of Romedio Schmitz-Esser
Currently, Romedio Schmitz-Esser is conducting several research projects on graffiti in the early modern period in the Tyrolean region and in Regensburg
