Encyclopedia Database

Information

The Encyclopedia Database is a free and open-access fulltext database containing encyclopedic works of the 19th and 20th centuries from different places in many languages. The purpose of the Encyclopedia Database is to “reveal the hidden grammars of transculturality”. We define encyclopedic writings as works that strive to present a comprehensive account of knowledge. Yet every piece of work is shaped by “hidden grammars”, which means the larger historical background of time and place, the circumstances of writing and publication, as well as people and ideas involved in the creation of a particular piece of work. By unfolding these layers in a clear structure, we want to draw a map of knowledge in space and time, and to trace back the cultural appropriation of key terms and concepts as they unfold their history in encyclopedic writings.

Leiden Weibo Corpus

Information

An annotated linguistic Corpus of Sina Weibo messages. The Leiden Weibo Corpus (LWC) contains 5.1 million messages from Sina Weibo, China’s premier Twitter-like microblogging service. Data for the LWC was collected in January 2012. As such, it contains many linguistic phenomena that may not be found in older corpora, such as suffixation with “-ing”, an aspectual marker borrowed from English. Furthermore, Sina Weibo messages come with valuable meta data, such as the gender of the user and his location. This information allows the LWC to calculate how often words are used in different provinces and cities across China, which is useful for research into lexical variation across China. Naturally, the LWC also supports searching for single words or grammar patterns, such as “any verb followed by an aspectual particle and then a noun”. This feature may also be of interest to students and teachers of Mandarin who are looking for example sentences.

The database of collectors seals of the National Institute of Japanese Literature contains more than 20.000 records of collectors of Japanese literature. Additionally it includes almost 9000 pictures. It is not only possible to confirm readings of stamps, the identity of the collectors and the span of their collections, but also stamps from bookshops and book lenders have been included, making it possible to trace the trade of historical books and documents during the early modern, the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa period, even up until modern day.

A monthly journal of art "Mizue" was founded in 1905. The founder Tojiro Oshita is a watercolor artist and he had contributed to the spread of the watercolor painting art in Japan. The main purpose of publishing this title was to promote the study of art especially watercolor painting art. However, the journal also contained many articles on western art as well as Japanese art with plentiful illustrations introducing many artists of those days. Though it ceased publishing in 1922, Mizue is an indispensable and basic material to study modern Japanese art history.

It was conceived as an “information platform and capacity building tool” for China’s growing nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. It reports on nonprofit organizations and NGOs engaged in public welfare activities. It carries feature articles and interviews on topics of interest to China’s civil society organizations, and exchanges ideas on topics related to the development of China’s civil society. Quarterly issues of CDB are printed and distributed to Chinese NGOs, researchers, international development agencies, and Chinese government agencies engaged in poverty alleviation, sustainable development and social welfare projects. CDB currently has more than 47,000 subscribers to its online newsletter and 5,000 to its print issues.

This bibliography covers many features of Korean history. The subjects include not only political, diplomatic, and economic history, but also historical linguistics, art history, literature, philosophy and religion, and overseas Koreans, for example. Chronologically, coverage concludes in the 1960s. I have not sought to compile a comprehensive list for each subject. Rather, I have provided publications that have appeared since the publication in 1980 of the annotated bibliography Studies on Korea: A Scholar's Guide and recent publications not cited in that work. This bibliography, then, is both an updating of and a supplement to that venerable reference.

The infrastructure for digital archives and e-learning includes the establishment of electronic databases, user habits, information technology literacy, Internet accessibility, government regulations and policies, advanced academic research environment, capabilities of industrial applications, services and marketing, etc. At present, the proportion of Internet users in Taiwan is one of the highest in the world; all the elementary, junior high, and high schools have Internet access. In addition, projects for e-government, e-commerce, broadband fixed network, e-learning and e-health have been set in motion. Furthermore, academic and research institutions have established solid technology foundations for electronic databases, information retrieval, language processing, the Internet, and multimedia presentation and management. Apart from government and academia, Taiwan's information technology industries and e-commerce services are also making good progress. As a preeminent research organization in Taiwan, Academia Sinica has devoted to the preservation of its academic resources. Since 1980, Academia Sinica has started digitizing the archives and collections of its institutes. The Scripta Sinica database, officially accessible online since 1995, can rival the famous huge Chinese Ancient books database, Si Ku Quan Shu, in Ch'ing Dynasty. This online system has received much attention and has been used in Taiwan and worldwide. Since 2002, Academia Sinica has enlarged the digitization projects of its important collections, and made them available over the Internet. The contents include Taiwan's fishes, shells, aboriginal artifacts, paleography, ancient maps and contracts, and also include modern China's historical maps, remote sensing imagery, diplomatic and economic records, Chinese historical artifacts (such as archeological materials, engraved stones, stone and bronze rubbing, bamboo scripts, rare books, ethnological collection of Southwestern China, and the lexicon of Ming-Qing Archives), and Mandarin Chinese and Formosa language archives. There are nearly one hundred digital resources. Users can access these resources online via Internet, without needs to be physically present in the library, museum, or archive centers. There are 150 websites and over 1 million items of digital archives, accessible through the Internet portal, Academia Sinica Digital Resources. This is the world's largest Traditional Chinese digital database.

The Seattle Art Museum’s Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

Information

The Seattle Art Museum is home to a premier collection of Chinese art in North America, which was formed largely in the twentieth century during the directorship of museum founder Dr. Richard E. Fuller (director 1933-73). Although Seattle’s Chinese collection is best known for its jades, ceramics, and later Buddhist sculpture, during the directorship of Mimi Gardner Gates (director 1994–2009) and shaped by successive curators Jay Xu, Hsueh-man Shen and Josh Yiu, the collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy grew substantially, adding important works of the Ming and Qing dynasties as well as the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. While varied in quality and modest in size, Seattle’s collection of 152 Chinese painting and calligraphy has never been studied in depth and is heretofore largely unpublished. For the first time, it is being introduced and made universally accessible through this newly developed online catalogue, which features thoughtful and provocative essays about major works by renowned scholars, with high-resolution, zoom-able images of the works of art, and thorough documentation—including transcriptions and translations of inscriptions and colophons, and seals which are transcribed, identified and located.

The English North China Herald is universally acclaimed as the prime printed source in any language for the history of the foreign presence in China from around 1850 to the 1940s. During this so-called ‘treaty century’ (1842-1943) the Great Western Powers established a strong presence in China through their protected enclaves in the major cities. It was published in Shanghai, at the heart of China’s dealing with the Euro-American world and a city at the forefront of developments in Chinese politics, culture, education and the economy. As the official journal for British consular notifications, and announcements of the Shanghai Municipal Council, it is the first – and sometimes only – point of reference for information and comment on a range of foreign and Chinese activities. Regularly it also features translations of Chinese official notifications and news. The Herald had correspondents across the whole of China. These supplied a constant stream of news of an incredible variety, such as, apart from news and gossip reflecting the social, cultural and political life of the foreign settlements; trade statistics, stock prices, Chinese news, essays on Chinese culture and language, law reports from foreign courts in the settlements, company reports, news on foreign social, cultural and political life, maps, cartoons, photographs, stock prices and law and company reports, advertisements, tables of tea, silk and cotton exports, or long-forgotten facts about missionaries, birth, marriage, and death announcements, facts about other foreign nationals – the French, Danish, Italian, German, Dutch, and so on. Although a thriving treaty port press developed over the century of the foreign presence, no other newspaper existed over such an extended period, and covers it in such incredible depth and variety. The dense unindexed columns of the Herald offer therefore an indispensable, still largely unexplored treasure-trove for any scholar of modern Chinese history. War, revolution and politics have conspired to destroy library holdings or frustrate access to publications from China’s treaty century. The fully text-searchable North China Herald online is one of the primary sources on a period which continues to shape much of China’s world and worldview.

Freer/Sackler Gallery: Song and Yuan Dynasty Painting and Calligraphy

Information

The Freer Gallery of Art possesses one of the most important collections of Chinese painting outside Asia, and its holdings from the Song and Yuan dynasties (10th–14th centuries) are particularly significant. The collection includes an extraordinary group of eighty-two paintings—illustrating a range of themes, compositions, and stylistic conventions—and three independent works of calligraphy, two of which take the form of rubbings. More than ninety other examples of Song and Yuan calligraphy are featured in frontispieces, inscriptions, or colophons attached to paintings. Many of the eighty-five Freer works have assumed near-iconic status in the study of Chinese brushwork in the West. Despite their exceptional quality, however, most are being thoroughly published for the first time on this website. This pioneering project enables web users around the globe to study these artworks in their entirety and, through the comprehensive documentation of all associated texts and accessories, gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for one of the world's great artistic traditions.

The resource contains not only the full set of the English version of the Beijing Review (or Peking Review respectively 北京周报) from its first issue in 1958 on, but also the full sets of its printed German, French, Spanish and Japanese equivalents, i.e. the Beijing Rundschau (Peking Rundschau), the Beijing Information (Pekin Information), the 北京周報 (pekin shuho) and the Beijing Informa (Pekin Informa), which all started in 1963/1964 (with the exception of two Japanese issues in 1957) and stopped being published in paper in 2000. They are now continued in electronic form and only the English version has a parallel paper version. These electronic versions are currently not included in the database as is the Chinese version.

CHANT offers access to different types of Ancient Chinese texts. It consists of the following databases: oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文文庫: Jiaguwen database), bronce inscriptions (金文文庫: Jinwen database), texts on bamboo slips or silk (竹簡帛書文庫: Jianbo database), texts dating from Han and Pre-Han periods (先秦兩漢文庫) and from the Six Dynasties (魏晉南北朝文庫). While the first four databases assemble transcriptions and images of excavated text written on the different materials, the latter two only give typed texts. You will have to install a special font for each of the first four databases.

The "Digital Gazetteer of the Song Dynasty (DGSD) is the most comprehensive print source for Song geography in any language. DGSD is a MySQL database derived primarily from the Alphabetical List. The Alphabetical List is an index to every jurisdiction in the Song (960-1276) spatial administrative hierarchy named in one or more of the following three Song texts: the Song History (宋史Song shi) Geography Monograph, the 980 Records of the Universal Realm in the Taiping Era (太平寰宇紀Taiping huanyu ji), and the 1085 Treatise on the Nine Territories in the Yuanfeng Reign (元豐九域志Yuanfeng jiuyu zhi). Initiated on imperial order, the Kangxi zidian 康熙字典 (The Imperial Character Dictionary) was first published in 1716 after about five years of compilation. Emperor Kangxi wrote the preface to the dictionary and thus granted the book and the system of 214 radicals the dictionary uses for structuring its content official status. Containing 47.035 entries it remained the most popular and comprehensive Chinese character dictionary up to time Morohashi's Dai kanwa jiten was published in the 1950ies. The database provides radical, stroke count and pinyin/zhuyinzimu indexes. Full text searches are also possible. For each character its modern reading and the Unicode code point are given. The display of the entries can be switched between simplified and traditional characters and scans from the late Qing Wentong edition (文同書局) are provided for comparison. The original pages may also be printed.

The Lienü zhuan offers important insights into the culture, politics, and social structure of early China, as well as into the representation of women in various phases of China’s history. The project for the Scripta Sinica database began in 1984. The first aim of this project was to digitize all documents essential to research in traditional Sinology. Secondly, a full-text database was established for academic research. Until present, Scripta Sinica is the largest Chinese full text database to encompass an enormous breadth of historical materials of this scale.

More than 460 titles （new titles） and 402,000,000 characters of materials pertaining to the traditional Chinese classics have been included in the database and have been categorized with meticulous care. The Scripta Sinica database contains almost all of the important Chinese classics, especially those related to Chinese history. In the future, we will continue with the digitalization of more historical materials, and add new features to the system. We hope to provide scholars, students, and the general public with an excellent full-text database and search engine for the study of Chinese history and culture.

Peter Bol, Harvard College Professor and Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, published the first edition of Sung Research Tools in 1990. This new online collection comprises a descriptive, annotated bibliography of 654 early Western books on Imperial China up to 1850, all to be found in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. The collection is based on the book Western Books on China published up to 1850 by John Lust.

The material is of unique historical interest, containing scrutiny of China by Western societies. The material contains an abundance of observations. The books, in a variety of Western languages, testify to the formidable difficulties encountered by Westerners, who attempted to extend their own familiar historical, linguistic and religious perceptions to the Chinese context.

In 1987 the project was published by IDC on microfiche. Now the collection is completely digitized to be published in an online subscription-based environment. The collection offers advanced research tools, such as MARC applications for the bibliographical material. Sources are now ranged by subject and all texts are fully readable. Search on title, author, language, year and place of publication is all possible. All pages can be printed and downloaded.

Original materials were acquired by Joseph Francis Charles Rock (1884-1962) and Quentin Roosevelt (1919-1948). The Harvard-Yenching Library's holdings (510 from Joseph Rock and 88 from Quentin Roosevelt together with three long funereal scrolls) were acquired by Harvard-Yenching Institute in 1945.

Historical Note:

The Naxi (Chinese people) are an ethnic minority in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province in China, near the borders of Tibet and Burma. The population is estimated to be around 250,000, and made up largely of farmers and traders. The Naxi language is the only remaining living pictographic language today.

Political Communications and Mass Education in China in the Early Years of the People’s Republic.

The holdings at the Center for Research Libraries are especially rich in primary documents of political communications. The pamphlets, reports, newspapers, and other kinds of printed materials held by CRL chronicle the activities of political figures, parties and organizations around the globe. Such documents are vital source materials for history and area studies, but tend to be produced erratically and disappear quickly.

The Hunter Collection consists of mass education materials published in Hong Kong and in Mainland China, particularly Shanghai, in the years 1947-1954. These include approximately 200 cartoon books, pamphlets, postcards, and magazines, heavily pictorial in content, on such topics as foreign threats to Chinese security, Chinese relations with the Soviet Union, industrial and agricultural production, and marriage reform. The materials were produced by both Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist) and Communist regimes, and appear to be directed at the general youth and adult populations of China.

Chinese Women's Magazines in the Late Qing and Early Republican Period

This database of the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA) is linked to a collaborative project funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the German Humboldt Foundation. The primary objective of the project is to restore complexity to early-twentieth-century Chinese history by liberating that history from its own reductive discourses on the failings of tradition and the promise of modernity. Our instrument and object of investigation is the popular press, a new medium that dominated the contemporary print market and became one of the prime sites for the dissemination of knowledge and the production of culture. In particular, our focus is on four seminal women's or gendered journals—a key genre of the popular media—published between 1904 and 1937. They include Nüzi shijie (Women's World, 1904-07), Funü shibao (The Women's Eastern Times, 1911-17), Funü zazhi (The Ladies' Journal, 1915-31), and Linglong (Elegance, 1931-37).

Fu Ssu-Nien Library of the Institute of History and Philology holds more than 10,000 bronze rubbings (bronze script rubbings) which are the treasured collections of the famous connoisseurs Liu Li-zh and Chen Jie-chi from the late Ch'ing to the early Republic of China. Many of these rubbings were made by the renown artisans Chou Kang-yuan and Wang Siou-ren themselves. These beautifully made and carefully sealed rubbings, not only preserving the scripts, decorative patterns and shapes of many bronze artefacts, but also recording the remarks and seals of many past collectors and reviewers, are great works of art. In order to improve both the public access to these precious rubbings and their preservation condition, the Institute has worked hard on their digitalisation for public use on line. In 2004 the Institute officially announced its Bronze Rubbings Digital Archives at a conference on bronze and stone.

The Buddhist rubbings collection in Fu Ssu-nian Library is the largest one in Taiwan. A majority of these rubbings are from China, including Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Gansu provinces. These rubbings are dated from the 5th century to the modern time. In addition, several rubbings are from foreign countries, such as the inscriptions of Sakyamuni and Bhaisajyaguru statues in the Golden Hall of Horyu-ji Tempel in Japan. From the seals on the rubbings, we know some former collectors such as Gui Fu, Duan Fang, Zhou Xingyi, Xu Naichang, Ke Changsi, Pan Zuyin and Liu Xihai. Some of the rubbings were collected by Mr. Shi Zhangru, a researcher of the institute, during his field trips in the Yao County, Shaanxi, in the 1940's. The content of the rubbing is generally about the wishes of the devotees, circumstances for making statues, including the organizations of the devotees. Writing of the epigraphy provides important social historical information for ancient China.

The Opium War instigated the dramatic changes in modern China. Negotiations with foreign powers after the middle of the 19th century became the core of development in Chinese history. Foreigners came to fight for their interests in China; China aimed at building up military might and national wealth as the way of survival. Since the late Qing, Chinese modern history has been focused on foreign issues and national development. The archives collected and store up on the Institute of Modern History of Academia Sinica from Chinese diplomatic and economic offices in the modern era are the jewels in the study of modern Chinese history. The project to digitalize this collections will help the keeping and improve the effectiveness of use of these files and build a more intimate and broader platform for academic dissemination and research needs.

The National Library of Vietnam (NLV) in Hanoi holds a special collection of some 4000 ancient texts in Hán and Nôm, the former ideographic writing systems of Vietnam. Since 2006, the NLV has co-operated with The Vietnamese Nôm Preservation Foundation (VNPF) to preserve this important cultural heritage through the creation of a digital library. What you see in the images and metadata on this website are the first steps for creating a digital library for scholarly research, teaching, and learning in Vietnam and abroad. The goal of this joint project is to create a user-friendly digital library of the entire Hán-Nôm collection at the National Library, using current techniques in digital capture, library science, and information technology. This is the first such digital library of ancient texts in Vietnam. Many of these texts have not been previously presented to the world because of their fragile condition.

The focus of this website and database is on the entertainment newspapers known as xiaobao and illustrated journals known as huabao of the time period between the 1880s and the 1930s. They are all Shanghai-based because this city had become the entertainment and media capital of China. This was facilitated by its economic muscle as a hub of trade and, increasingly, manufacturing, and the fact that as "foreign settlement" it offered to both foreigner and Chinese substantial freedoms by being outside of the censorship control of the Qing court and later of the Republican government. Other cities in China had little or none of such papers even after the fall of the Qing dynasty. However, Shanghai entertainment papers were available throughout the country through a dense distribution network.

Wanfang data's New Local Gazetteers database gives access to currently (10.2011) 10.931 titles falling into the greater genre of local monographs published in the PRC since 1949. It contains not only the local gazetteers of the different provinces, districts, counties and cities but also special monographs on, for example, the food industry or traffic administration of a certain area, as well as treatises on regional toponyms or famous persons. Local gazetteers are mostly officially sponsored and initiated and follow certain compilation rules. But they contain valuable details and accounts on larger and smaller administrative units of the PRC and thus provide important source materials for studying modern and contemporary China. The database may be searched by region, topic, resource type etc. and also by full text (which was done with OCR). Hit lists may be further drilled down by facets. A PDF of the smallest unit a hit belongs to is provided for reference and download. Together these units amount to more than 3,3 mio. No PDF of the whole title is offered.

Imperial examination records from the Tianyige Museum

This collection assembles 370 volumes of Imperial examinations records stored in and published as print editions by the Tianyige Museum in the years 2006, 2007, and resp. 2010. Among them are 56 volumes of Records of Palace Examinations (登科录) from the years 1371 till 1460, 39 volumes of Records of Metropolitan Examinations (会试录) from the years 1430 till 1580, and 275 volumes of Records of Provincial Examinations (乡试录) from the years 1486 till 1510. Scanned images of the originals are provided. There is no searchable full text of the books.

JapanKnowledge is a website that offers a large number of reference works. The contents include important dictionaries such as Nihon dai hyakka zensho (=Nipponica) (large general Japanese encyclopedia), Nihon kokugo daijiten (Japanese dictionary), Nihon kokushi daijiten (encyclopedia for Japanese history), Nihon rekishi chimei taikei (historic geographical encyclopedia), Jitsû (character dictionary) and also the "Encyclopedia of Japan". In addtion the dictionaries of current words Imidas and Gendai yôgo no kiso chishiki are included. Also fulltexts of books in the Tôyô bunko series and the collection of classic Japanese literature Shinpen nihon koten bungaku zenshû is to be found.

The database offers a simple and an advanced search. Not only the headings of the dictionary entries can be searched, but also the fulltext of the reference works. The advanced search includes also the option to search only the content of several large dictionaries individually (single version). The third search option is called "bookshelf" and offers a browse function with limited search possibilities. Please note that one content, the Kojiruien, is only available through the "bookshelf" menu. In order to activate the browse display please tick on "Flashで本文表示". When a single record is displayed the Knowledge Searcher function can be used. Please click on the respective button which changes from white to lilac colour. When you highlight a term you want to know more about with the activated Knowledge Searcher function another simple search is carried out automatically and the search result is displayed in a new window.

The interface gives access to the early period of Chinese periodical publishing covering the time from the late Qing up to the end of the Republican period, that is from 1833 to 1949. Divided into two main parts and further subdivided into several batches the database will finally include more the 20,000 journals and more then 15 mio. articles. The material and expertise the project relies on is that of the Shanghai tushuguan and can be seen as a kind of "full text" extension of their Quanguo baosuoyin 全国报刊索引. While the first main part on the Late Qing, the 晚清期刊全文数据库 (1833-1911), is already completed, of the second part on the Republican period, 民国时期期刊全文数据库 (1911-1949), the first three batches have appeared, further two batches are expected for 2012.

Currently access to the 302 different journal titles of the Late Qing part and the first three batches of the Republican period part with more than 3500 journal titles are accessible. Further batches will follow.

The search interface allows users to search by article title, author, journal title, date, etc. and to view and download the respective article as scanned image pages embedded in a PDF. Under 期刊导航 (Browse by Journal) a short description of the publication history and content of each subscribed journal is given as well as the possiblity to get an overview of the issues published and the articles in each issue. Journals that appear in grey are not accessible resp. not subscribed. On the left hand side browsing via subject category is possible. By choosing 晚清期刊 or 民国时期期刊 from the 数据库 pull down menu one may confine the hit list to the respective database.

Note: what is labeled as 全文 (full text) in the database actually means 'complete text'. There is no searchable full text of the articles themselves.

Die Tenpō-Reformen in den 1840er Jahren zu Ende der japanischen Abschließungsperiode betrafen die Welt der Holzschnitte durch zahlreiche Einschränkungen und Verbote, sie hatten aber auf die Welt der ukiyo-e vor allem einen nachhaltigen Effekt:

Die bisherigen Hauptthemen der Bilder, Kurtisanen und Schauspieler, verloren an Popularität, Karikaturen aller Art von politischen Karikaturen (fūshiga) bis zu harmlosen Scherzzeichnungen (giga) ohne tiefere Bedeutung setzten sich als neues Genre durch. Bis zum Ende der Tokugawa-Zeit blieben Karikaturen ein ungeheuer beliebtes Genre, und auch die Neuerungen der Meiji-Zeit und die autoritären Meiji-Regierung sind ein beliebtes Objekt von Karikaturen.

Dieses Genre ist bisher von der ukiyo-e-Forschung noch wenig erfasst worden, wozu sicherlich der schwierige Zugang - viele Bilder enthalten viel schwer lesbaren Text, die Texte und Bilder sind so verklausuliert, dass sie nur schwer verständlich sind - beiträgt. Dazu kommt, dass die herkömmliche ukiyo-e-Forschung ästhetische Kriterien bei der Auswahl ihrer Forschungsobjekte angewandt hat, die die Behandlung von Karikaturen von vorneherein ausschloss. Erst in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten sind auch die Karikaturen auf ein immer größeres Interesse der Forscher gestoßen, wobei einerseits Subgenres der Karikaturen (Erdbeben-Bilder, Masern-Bilder, Yokohama-Bilder, ken-Bilder) oder Karikaturen einzelner Künstler (Kuniyoshi, Kyōsai, Kiyochika) zusammenfassend darzustellen versucht wurden.

Das vom Fond zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF) finanzierte Projekt versucht eine Datenbank aller Karikaturen auf kommerziellen Holzschnitten von 1842 bis 1905 zu erstellen.

Nichigai WHOPLUS is divided into two files: WHO and Jinbutsu odan file (人物ファイル横断, lit. Figures Cross-reference). WHO provides a full text search with the detailed search options while Jinbutsu odan file searches name headings and full text. The setting when entering the database is the Jinbutsu odan file that comprises all data.

This web-based fulltext database of the Shitong 十通 provides image/text comparision and all other features of the Sibu congkan 09 Extended Edition. For more details see there. The Shitong, the "Ten Encyclopedic (or General) Histories", assemble ten central historical works, that aimed at covering all of Chinese history. They mainly focus on governmental institutions and their changes in duty or in name, but also assemble a great variety of sources and material under rubrics such as boarders, regional administration, the examination system, law, astronomy, catastrophes, bibliography, plants and animals etc. The genre was initiated by Du You in the late 8th century with his 200 volume work Tongdian and adapted, modified and extended in scope by the famous scholars Zheng Qiao (1106-1162) and Ma Duanlin (1254-1323). These works soon were published together as the "Three tong" 三通. In the 18th century new interest in the genre arouse and six continuations respectively extensions were published. While the first three works relied on an individual scholar, the Qing works were all imperially sponsored and officially published. Each of the later took one of the early works as his model. In 1927 the Qingchao Xu Wenxian tongkao appeared and the full set of "Ten tong" was published by the Commercial Press 1935-1937. The scanned and digitized version presented here is based on this edition. The compilation is structured according to the line of tradition into 3 “dian”, 3 “zhi” and 4 “kao”. The database is the digital equivalent of a 16 volume printed collection of stone inscriptions taken from books about (金石志) or containing reproductions of inscriptions (such as 地方志) published up to 1949. Those materials are reproduced in facsimile but there are no rubbings or photographs of the actual inscribed physical object.

A speciality of the database provider Shutong is the use of a special font, that allows them to transcribe traditionel texts with all their character variants. The stone inscription database has moreover included a reference work for people, places and official names as well as for character variants, words and proverbs and allusions, 成语典故.

The Song huiyao (宋会要) was compiled by a special office during the Song, collecting important documents on institutions, regulations and constitutions etc. It existed only in manuscript form and got lost later. Larger parts of the Song huiyao were copied into the Ming dynasty encyclopaedia Yongle dadian. From there the texts were recovered by Xu Song 徐松 (1781-1848) and compiled into the work digitized in this database, the Song huiyao jigao 宋會要輯稿 (literally "Draft re-compilation of the Important documents of the Song"). Xu Song's work was never printed. 1936 the Beiping tushuguan published a photomechanical reproduction of his manuscript. The database allows comparison of the digitized full text and the scanned images of the original. The database is fully searchable. YOMIDAS REKISHIKAN, the new database service of The Yomiuri Shimbun, is Japan’s first online database service that allows a user to search or browse through more than 10 million articles carried by the newspaper since its inaugural issue in 1874. Images of news pages from the inaugural issue in 1874 up to 1989 have been recorded. 　All news articles can be found using headlines and key words. Old news articles can be found using words in common use today. About 4.8 million news articles of The Yomiuri Shimbun are available from 1986 onward. About 175,000 articles of The Daily Yomiuri are available from 1989 onward. The three databases mentioned above can be searched using “key words,” such as names of persons, places and events; “fields,” such as politics, economy and culture; and “date” of publication. Note that the search by key word is carried out through “YOMIDAS YOGO JISHO,” a glossary developed by The Yomiuri Shimbun, which enables a user to find a news article with ease. In the personality database there are about 26,000 contemporary persons in many fields who are linked to related news articles. Moreover, the new database is equipped with various functions, including “Imidas 2008 (c) Shueisha,” a glossary of the latest terminology of current affairs compiled by Shueisha Inc.

The “Kikuzo II visual for libraries” is the electronic version of Asahi Shimbun. The database covers the articles since the initial number in 1879 until today. The years 1879 until 1989 can be searched as PDF files. For the articles since 1985 a full-text search is provided. The database also includes an archive of historical photographs (approximately 10000 pictures) that were taken in various Asiatic countries between the so called Manchurian incident (1931/32) until the end of the World War II. Furthermore the biographical information of approximately 35.000 contemporary persons can be searched. The online version of the dictionary Chiezou is also included in this database. Description: The "Historical Book Catalogue of China" (中国历代典籍总目) assembles currently more than 2 Million entries of historical Chinese titles from more than 20 different catalogues. Further extensions are planned. The resource collects and structures all information on Chinese historical books contained in the bibliographical chapters of the Standard Histories, private and officially compiled historical bibliographies as well as current and historical library and topical catalogues. The entries can be browsed from different angles of research perspective i.e. bibliographical category (經史子集叢), kind of catalogue (歷史著錄、館藏著錄 …), time the book was composed, time of printing, kind of edition (稿本、活字本、刻本 …) and place owning a copy (中國、美國、日本 …). The information of each edition was analysed and filed into different data fields to allow complex searches (高級檢索) and advanced statistic analysis of the data (數據分析). Description: Qiushi ("Seeking truth") is the main organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the PRC. From late 2009 on the journal - or excerpts from the journal - also appears in English. The database gives access to the searchable full text of the English edition. PDF for download are provided. For the original Chinese publication of Qiushi please consult the database "Chinese Academic Journals", where access to the complete set of issues back to 1994 is provided. To read older issues or even the predecessor of Qiushi namely Hongqi 红旗, CrossAsia resp. the East Asia Department of the Berlin State Library currently can only offer "paper". Hongqi (Zsn 11972) was started in 1958 and appeared until 1988 when the name was changed to Qiushi (Zsn 73611).

The search slot of the database provides selection buttons for article, image, and news. "News" searches extracts from Xinhua (starting 2011.9) and actually were not published in Qiushi; "image" search returns articles with paragraphs, where the search term and also have a picture appears. Thus the picture and the search term are in some cases not directly connected; "article" searches the full text content of the Qiushi issues 2009 to the present.

Qiushi is offered via the Sinoperi portal which also offers Beijing Review (北京周报), China Pictorial (人民画报) and People's China (人民中国). Currently CrossAsia has only also subscribed Beijing Review. Renmin huabao and Renmin zhongguo can be searched and hit lists showing bibliographical information and the respective text snippet are shown, but no download of fulltext view is possible.

Description: The Shenbao-database offers access to the most important historical newspaper in China. Shenbao newspaper was first published in April 30th, 1872 in the Shanghai International Settlement. Under Ernest Major (1841-1908) as editor, Shenbao developed into the first modern newspaper in China and soon became the daily paper most read nationwide.

The database covers the full run of Shenbao, from April 1872 to its cessation in May 1949.

The database makes available searchable full texts and PDF-images of all issues. Advertisements are excluded from the full text. Searches can be confined to an issue or year and also to headings, captions etc.

The CETD (Chinese Electronic Theses and Dissertations Service) collects dissertations and theses of all main Taiwan universities and research institutions but also some from abroad (a full list is shown under 校院瀏覽. The "service" startet in 2005 with the aim to collect all dissertations and master theses "from both coasts and all four Chinese regions" (兩岸四地) at one plattform. While most of the dissertations are written in Chinese and derive from Taiwanese institutions, the database also provides quite a number written in English. Currently the database allows searches over the titles, abstracts, table of contents, bibliographies, adviser's names etc. of about 114 000 dissertations and theses; about 80 000 of them are accessible as full text PDF (marked in the hits with a text icon). The full text of the PDFs themselves are not searched via the CETD interface, but the PDFs can be searched and printed after download.

The "Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center" offers a wide range of Tibetan literature from all spheres of life – traditional medicine, astrology, astronomy, alchemy, art, history, geography, biography, grammar, folk culture, poetics, and so on. Most of the works, however, are religious in character as they comprise traditional Tibetan Buddhist scriptures stretching back over a period of more than 1.300 years. At present, the database offers about 4.000 works in more than 10.000 volumes accessible as PDF files representing scans from manuscripts, blockprints, and books or editions published mainly from India and China. The material can be searched by title, author, subjects, places and a number of other aspects (click "Search By" at the top right).

Founded by Gene Smith in 1999, it is the mission of the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center to preserve, organize and disseminate Tibetan works by using the latest digital technologies in order to ensure that "the treasures of this incredible body of literature will never be lost".

Based originally on Tetsuji Morohashi’s 1960 Dai Kan-Wa Jiten 大漢和辞典, the Zhongwen da cidian was the preeminent Chinese dictionary until the publication of the Hanyu da cidian. The online version of the dictionary contains over 370,000 entries, and is fully searchable by single graph or phrase; a native radical-stroke index is also provided.

The single-character search function from the Sou wen jie zi dictionary contains the entries from the 54,678 characters in the Hanyu da zidian in a multi-scope searchable digital interface. The “phrase search” function returns standard phrases in which a graph is located, configurable by location within the phrase, length of the phrase, or reduplicated binomes. The “text search” function searches for occurrences of the search term within the following classical texts: the Analects 論語, the Mengzi孟子, the Great Learning 大學, the Doctrine of the Mean 中庸, the Laozi 老子, the Zhuangzi 莊子 and the Three Hundred Tang Poems 唐詩三百首.

The CTP Dictionary features a good amount of lexical information, including pronunciations in Mandarin pinyin, Cantonese jyutping, and Stimson’s Tang reconstructions, detailed graph composition information (and other graphs related by component), numeric references to other dictionaries, and full entries from the Shuowen jiezi and Guangyun dictionaries. This dictionary has three additional unique strengths: 1) Full integration with the extensive textual corpora on the site (see its listing in the Encyclopedia section below), featuring a wide range of examples drawn from the texts provided for each graph and many common compounds; 2) The dictionary search function accepts strings of characters, or one can simply use any of the texts on the site, and then provides basic lexical information (pronunciation, meanings, variant graphic forms and links to other dictionaries) for each graph in the order entered; and 3) The Advanced Search function “Text/concept search: Dictionary match” permits searches limited by specific gloss of many graphs, as generated from the English translations.

Searches can be performed in simplified or traditional Chinese, including many variant forms; the ability to parse whole texts and use the individual graphs as dictionary input is a powerful feature.

The Unihan Database is the result of the effort to create one unified character set for all Chinese, Japanese, and Korean graphs; it currently supports tens of thousands of unique graphs, and is now the standard character set for most systems. The website features grid display and two search functions: radical and stroke count, or text search for English gloss or pronunciation in Mandarin pinyin, Cantonese jyutping, Stimson’s Tang pronunciation from T’ang Poetic Vocabulary, Korean hangul, Japanese on, or Japanese kun. On the webpage for each graph, full encoding data, stroke count, dictionary codes, and direct links to the online MDBG, CantoDict, and WWWJDIC dictionaries are provided.

One should be aware that only a subset of all Chinese graphs have been included into the Unicode standard—thereby becoming searchable and independent of modalities such as writing style and format—and only a subset of this is represented in most Chinese fonts. Auf der Höhe der Qing-Dynastie beauftragte Qianlong die Siku quanshu, wahrscheinlich um zu beweisen, dass die Mandschu die Yongle-Enzyklopädie (永樂大典) der Ming-Dynastie übertreffen könnten. Die Yongle Dadian von 1407 war die größte Enzyklopädie zu dieser Zeit.

Die Redaktion bestand aus 361 Wissenschaftlern, mit Ji Yun (紀昀) und Lu Xixiong (陸錫熊) als Chefredakteuren. Die Zusammenstellung begann 1773 und war 1782 beendet. Man sammelte und anerkannte über 10000 Handschriften aus der kaiserlichen Sammlung und anderen Bibliotheken. Etwa 3000 Schriften wurden vernichtet, da sie als Mandschu-feindlich eingestuft wurden. Letztendlich wurden 3461 Bücher für die Aufnahme in die Siku quanshu ausgewählt. Sie wurden in 36381 Bänden mit mehr als 79000 Kapiteln gebunden. Auf den ca. 2,3 Millionen Seiten finden sich etwa 800 Millionen chinesische Schriftzeichen.

Vier Exemplare für den Kaiser wurden in extra errichteten Bibliotheken in der Verbotenen Stadt, dem Alten Sommerpalast, Shenyang und der Wenjin Kammer in Chengde aufbewahrt. Drei weitere Kopien für die Öffentlichkeit wurden in Siku quanshu-Bibliotheken in Hangzhou, Zhenjiang und Yangzhou hinterlegt. Alle sieben Bibliotheken erhielten ebenfalls eine Kopie der kaiserlichen Enzyklopädie Gujin tushu jicheng von 1725.

Zwei Kopien der Siku quanshu wurden während des Taiping-Aufstandes vernichtet. Die Britische Armee verbrannte die verbleibende Kopie fast vollständig während des Zweiten Opiumkrieges. Die vier verbliebenen Ausgaben erlitten einige Schäden während des Zweiten Weltkrieges, doch die Kopie der Verbotenen Stadt (bekannt als Wenyuan ge 文淵閣) befindet sich gut erhalten im Nationalen Palastmuseum in Taipeh auf Taiwan. The database comprises the complete contents of the newspaper Taiwan Nichinichi Sinpou 《臺灣日日新報》 of the years1898-1944 as well as of its predecessor the Taiwan Shinpô 《臺灣新報》 of the years 1896 - 1897. The database is searchable by article titles and keywords, but not full-text. In order to increase the legibility 150.000 pages were rescanned. 3.500.000 article titles have been indexed. The Taiwan Nichinichi Sinpou 《臺灣日日新報》arose from the merger of the Taiwan Shinpô 《臺灣新報》 and Taiwan Nippô 《臺灣日報》 in 1898 under Japanese occupation. It was the highest-circulation newspaper and the most longlasting. The first issue had 6 pages, since November 1910 the newspaper had eight, six in Japanese and two in Chinese. Since July 1905 an independent Chinese issue existed under the title Kanbun Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpô (Hanwen Taiwan Riri Xinbao) 《漢文臺灣日日新報》, coming back to the original Japanese/Chinese layout in November 1911 and finally abandoning the Chinese pages in April 1937. The Taiwan Nichinichi Sinpou offers rich material for the study of the economic and social development of Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule.

The Pulverer Collection, acquired in its entirety by the Freer Gallery of Art in 2007, includes numerous rare and pristine examples of Japanese illustrated books produced in the Edo period and beyond. For more than thirty years Dr. Gerhard Pulverer, a renowned medical researcher in Germany, and his wife Rosemarie traveled the world and assembled the collection. Their holdings of more than 900 titles encompass almost 2,200 volumes that range in date from the early seventeenth century to the 1970s. Today the Pulverer Collection is regarded as one of the most outstanding and comprehensive collections of Japanese illustrated books outside Japan.

The Hentaigana App

Today, each syllable in Japanese is represented by a single hiragana. But this wasn't always the case: for more than a millennium, individual syllables were written using a variety of hiragana, each based on the cursive form of a different kanji. In modern times, these traditional kana came to be known as hentaigana, or "variant kana.” The kanji from which hentaigana were derived are called jibo, "parent characters."

Teaching yourself to read hentaigana has always had a reputation for being tedious and difficult, because it involved a lot of poring over charts and dictionaries. But the truth is that with the right app to help you out, it isn’t difficult at all—far from being tedious, it's addictive. All you have to do is learn to recognize which kanji each kana is based on, and how that kanji is read. This app will help you do that.

Basically, it’s a sort of Matrix-style riff on a stack of flashcards. The app presents you with a kana. If you nudge it a bit with your finger, it will flip over and turn into the kanji from which the kana was derived. You will also see the modern kana that tells you how to read the kanji. You can throw a kana out of the stack or toss it back in so it will keep appearing. Then, once you have learned it, you throw it out, too.

The app has a function that lets you track your progress and select particular sets of syllables to practice, and an interactive dictionary that shows all the hentaigana and jibo the app contains. You can choose how many kana to display, and how often to have the readings appear. We have even included a tab where you can read about the precious manuscripts, all housed in the special collections of Waseda University Library, from which the kana were taken. And soon we will be switching on a bonus feature that lets you practice reading a string of syllables forming words and phrases, rather than just individual kana.

Developed as a collaboration between UCLA and Waseda University as a project of the Tadashi Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities, this pioneering app—the first of its kind!—is expected to be the first in a series of similar apps, so keep an eye out for future releases!

Modern Chinese Scientific Terminologies

The WSC-Project (Wissenschaftssprache Chinesisch / Modern Chinese Scientific Terminologies) aims to understand the distribution and transformation of Euro-American knowledge in late imperial China (ca. 1600–1911) through the reconstruction of Chinese scientific terminologies coined, altered, disputed and successively refined since the early nineteenth century. Due to the vast amount of relevant sources, the project will limit its scope for the time being to the disciplines of philosophy, logic, physics, chemistry, geography (i.e. "knowledge on foreign countries"), politics and international law. In addition, it will concentrate on the formative period of modern Chinese scientific vocabulary between ca. 1840 and 1930.

In its current phase, the project focuses on the revision of a bibliographical database documenting translations of Western science and thought into Chinese during the period of investigation. Other data like biographical information on the authors and translators, or new terms developed and employed in these writings, are stored in related databases linked to the bibliography, which will be prepared for online access in two planned future stages of the project. Once completed, the three repositories will make the transmission of knowledge transparent and accessible by providing comprehensive information on the media, institutions, people, texts, terms, sites and images involved in diverse instances of distribution, adaptation and appropriation of knowledge from Euro-America and Japan in late Qing and early Republican China.

Duxieren is an aggregator of book reviews and literary criticism. Launched in October 2008, it collects essays from China's major newspaper book supplements (The Beijing News, Southern Metropolis Daily, and Oriental Morning Post) as well as posts by a range of lit bloggers, from Huang Jiwei to Sun Zhongxu to Berlin Fang. Although Duxieren is a decent source of criticism on Chinese literature, posts on foreign literature seem to make up a majority of the content the site aggregates. Book supplements tend to have a cosmopolitan outlook, and a number of the book bloggers are translators themselves, so the site is a convenient way to get a sense of how international literature and culture is being received in urban China. Duxieren is maintained by Bimuyu (比目鱼), whose own blog features book reviews, calligraphy, and short fiction.
