Prof. Dr. Peter Lampe

Prof. Lampe focuses his research and teaching on Biblical studies, particularly Pauline, Lukan and apocalyptic literature; early Christian archaeology and epigraphics; social history of early Christianity; Hellenistic background of early Christianity; rhetorical analysis of the New Testament; hermeneutics; epistemological and methodological questions; constructivism and exegesis. Before coming to Heidelberg, he held chairs at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, USA, and at the University of Kiel.
In 2003, he received the Ecumenical Preaching Award. In addition, he leads an archeological survey that has succeeded in rediscovering the primary settlements of Christian Montanism, Pepouza and Tymion.
Among his books are "Die stadtrömischen Christen in den ersten beiden Jahrhanderten. Untersuchungen zur Sozialgeschichte," (English translation: "From Paul to Valentinus"), "Felsen im Fluss: Schriftworte in provokativer Auslegung zu Themen der Zeit," "Pepouza and Tymion. The Discovery and Archaeological Exploration of a Lost Ancient City and an Imperial Estate," "Die Wirklichkeit als Bild: Das Neue Testament als ein Grunddokument abendländischer Kultur im Licht konstruktivistischer Epistemologie und Wissenssoziologie." He has published numerous articles in scholarly journals. He is co-editor of the journal "Zeitschrift f.d. Neutestamentliche Wissenschaft" and of the series "Novum Testamentum et Orbis Antiquus."
