Ruperto Carola maintains ranking from last year
Heidelberg University successfully maintained its leading position from last year in the 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities, known as the Shanghai Ranking. Ruperto Carola retains its No. 62 ranking among the world’s best universities. Within Germany, Heidelberg places third behind Munich’s Technical University (53) and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (60). Only four German universities are represented among the world’s top 100 this year, compared to last year’s six. In Europe, the Shanghai Ranking rates Ruperto Carola at No. 16.
The Shanghai ranking especially measures an institution’s scientific influence, making research a key factor in the evaluation. Publications and citations in international scientific journals make up 40% of the total score, alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals 30%, most frequently cited researchers 20%, and academic performance based on the size of the university 10%.
