Universität Heidelberg Honours for Students Successful in Sport

Ceremony in the Bel Etage – Distinctions for outstanding sporting achievements by Heidelberg students

Heidelberg University will be honouring 67 students who have participated successfully in various contests organised by the German University Sports Federation. The students were winners at German University Championships between 2007 and 2009 in judo, swimming, rowing, tennis, fencing, athletics and basketball, as well as in less well-known disciplines like wave riding or the mountain bike marathon. In the course of the ceremony on Thursday, 29 October 2009, the Rector of Heidelberg University, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel, will also be presenting students of Heidelberg University with distinctions for outstanding sporting achievements at a national and international level.

At the DLV Junior Championships 2009, Jennifer Klein outperformed all her rivals in the high jump and won a gold medal. At this year’s World Championships in Athletcis in Berlin, Anne Möllinger was part of the 4 x 100 metres relay team that won a bronze medal. Boris Trupka is the German judo champion, while Matthias Krieger came fifth at the 2008 Paralympics. Last year, Friederike Gubernatis was a member of the women’s handball team that won a gold medal at the Junior Championships. Heidelberg students were also members of the German women’s hockey team. Lydia Haase won a silver medal at the European Championships in 2009 and Mandy Haase was in the team that won an outstanding fourth place at the 2008 Olympic Games in Peking.

Among the swimmers, Petra Dallmann gained a silver medal as part of the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay team at the World Championships in 2009, while Isabell Härle came third in the 1,500 metres freestyle event at the German Championships in 2008 and also took part in the World Championships in 2009. Heidelberg University can also be proud of the success notched up by one of its students in gymnastics. Patricia Gayer is the 2009 German champion in all-round gymnastics (six events).
