Malta’s Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi Pays Official Visit to Heidelberg University

Today the prime minister of the Republic of Malta, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi, paid an official visit to Heidelberg University accompanied by a high-ranking delegation. He entered his name in the Golden Book of the University. Rector Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel welcomed the Maltese premier at the door of the Old University. In the Great Hall of the building he gave his guest an overview of the more than 620-year-old history of Germany’s oldest university. In the course of talks in the bel étage, the prime minister and his host exchanged information on new developments in the German higher-education system. The visit by this illustrious guest is a fruit of the close business relations with Malta entertained by honorary senator and honorary consul-general Prof. Dr. Viktor Dulger.

Lawrence Gonzi holds a doctorate in law and was sworn in as Prime Minister of Malta in March 2004. In his talks with the Rector his interest centred on the international reputation and worldwide connections of Heidelberg University. Among the delegation accompanying him were the ambassadors of the two countries, Dr. John Paul Grech and Karl Andreas Freiherr von Stenglin.
