A New Generation of Electron Microscopes

Press Release No. 35/2010
17 February 2010
International symposium of the cluster of excellence “Cellular Networks”

Heidelberg University’s cluster of excellence “Cellular Networks” will host an international symposium on 19 February 2010, which will explore a new generation of electron microscopes, particularly their development and their applications. It will focus on innovative methods with which aberrations in the lens system can be corrected. The symposium is entitled “Advances in Corrected Electron Microscopy in Materials Science and Biology” and will be attended by approximately 130 German and international participants.

“Given that the correction of aberrations has reached a new dimension, the resolution and application of electron microscopes has incited a revolution over the past ten years,” states Prof. Dr. Rasmus Schröder, professor of cryo-electron microscopy at the cluster of excellence “Cellular Networks” and organiser of the symposium. “This technical progress is vitally important not only for materials science but also for applications in biology and basic medical research.”

The symposium will be held on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Prof. Dr. Maximilan Haider, founder of the enterprise Corrected Electron Optical Systems (CEOS) and honorary professor at Karlsruhe Technical University. Professor Haider has played a key role in the development of so-called correctors. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Harald Rose will be honoured with this event. He is an emeritus professor of the Technical University of Darmstadt and recently celebrated his 75th birthday. These two internationally renowned scientists are closely associated with the research group headed by Professor Schröder, which develops optical elements for high-resolution electron microscopes.

In the course of the symposium, experts from various countries will present devices, which have already been used by the research community. In addition, they will elaborate on developments, which will be available in the near future.
