E-Journal on “Transcultural Studies”
14 December 2010
Articles on current issues in transcultural studies are the content of a new scientific journal published in electronic form by Heidelberg University’s Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. The English-language periodical “Transcultural Studies” will be issued twice a year on the internet as an e-journal. One of the authors in the first edition is Indian anthropologist Arjun Appadurai, whose article analyses some worrisome aspects of global interactions, notably on the financial markets. Appadurai teaches at New York University and is internationally renowned for his work on globalisation processes.
“Over the past 200 years, exchange processes between cultures have increased dramatically in extent, speed and diversity,” says Prof. Dr. Rudolf G. Wagner, co-director of the Cluster of Excellence and editor of the new publication. “The aim of our e-journal is to home in on these global developments.” All articles published are subject to a double, anonymous peer review procedure to ensure quality. Alongside the article by Arjun Appadurai, the e-journal contains two instalments of a series engaging with the challenges posed by writing a global history of modern art. There is also a study on the role of Japan in the emergence of the “neutrality” concept in international law.
Technically the project is supervised by Heidelberg University Library, which provides the “Open Journal System” open-source software and thus enables members of Heidelberg University to publish scientific/scholarly online journals. The e-journal “Transcultural Studies” will be introduced to the public by Prof. Wagner at 6 pm on Thursday, 16 December 2010 at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Transcultural Studies, Voßstraße 2, Building 4400. After the introduction, the electronic journal will be available on the internet at www.transculturalstudies.org .
