Ruperto Carola Strengthens Leading Position in Shanghai Ranking
15 August 2013
Heidelberg University has fared even better this year in the Academic Ranking of World Universities or Shanghai Ranking. Ruperto Carola is now ranked as the second-best university in Germany and 54th in the world. The university's world ranking last year was 62nd. The university climbed from last year's third place in Germany to second, behind Munich Technical University (50). Like last year, only four German universities made this year's worldwide top 100 list. The Shanghai Ranking boosted Ruperto Carola to No. 14 in Europe from 16 last year.
The Shanghai ranking especially measures an institution’s scientific influence, making research a key factor in the evaluation. Publications and citations in international scientific journals make up 40% of the total score, alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals 30%, most frequently cited researchers 20%, and academic performance based on the size of the university 10%.
