Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing Has New Industry Partner

The Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI), Heidelberg University’s established “Industry on Campus” project focused on research in digital image processing, is gaining a strong, new partner in industry with Bayer AG by entering into a cooperative agreement with Bayer Technology Services GmbH. The cooperation is aimed at promoting basic research at HCI with a view toward transferring its expertise in research and development projects to industrial applications. New technologies for pharmaceutical and plant research are among the focal points of their research.
Digital image processing is a key technology for using the ever-growing amount data obtained from cameras and sensors. The HCI and its industry partners are working together on basic research that were inspired by application issues. “When dealing with image analysis, companies from different business sectors are constantly running up against similar difficulties, difficulties that ultimately lead back to basic questions. To develop solutions to these fundamental and complex problems, we bring together the image processing experts and the users,” explains Prof. Dr. Bernd Jähne, Coordinating Director of the Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing.
“External research collaborations are a key element of our innovation strategy. Together with the experts at HCI and other partners we will create a technology platform for important applications in life sciences throughout the next years,” stated Dr. Günter Bachlechner, Head of Technology Development and Senior Vice President of Bayer Technology Services, at the contract signing ceremony. Bayer's technology affiliate offers holistic solutions for chemical and pharmaceutical systems – from development through engineering and construction to process optimisation of existing plants.
The Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing was established in 2008 as an “Industry on Campus” project at Heidelberg University. Under the umbrella of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), the HCI today comprises four research groups of approximately 100 scientists. In cooperation with large and medium-size partners from industry, the HIC pursues research in the fields of image processing and machine learning with a view toward the long term. The aim of the multidisciplinary HCI is to find solutions to complex research questions and enable the participating companies to successfully transfer this knowledge to applications.
