Nearly 580 Expected for International Summer School
30 July 2018
This summer Ruperto Carola will host nearly 580 young people from 56 countries around the world. They will be attending the International Summer School of German Language and Culture from 2 to 29 of August 2018. The courses are designed for students and others from abroad who wish to learn German or broaden their existing language skills. This year's umbrella theme is "Germany and Europe in the Context of Global Developments". The summer school will open on Thursday, 2 August 2018, in the Great Hall of the New University.
As in prior years, three different course tracks are on offer – classes in elementary, intermediate, and advanced German; a course for non-native GFL teachers and German majors; and a "Business German" course. In addition to the morning core language classes, participants can attend a variety of course-related classes and general lectures such as "Everyday German Culture in the European Context", and workshops in journalism, video production, photography or theatre. Other activities include a sport day, movie nights, and weekend excursions to Lake Constance, a boat trip on the Rhine river, or city tours of Strasbourg, Marburg, Tübingen, and others. German students will advise the visitors, who hail from five continents, and assist with questions on everyday life and leisure activities.
The programme also includes events that are open to Heidelberg residents. On 23 August, Prof. Dr Gertrud M. Rösch of Ruperto Carola's Institute for German as a Foreign Language Philology will speak on the topic of "Abstract Utopia. Literary Images of Europe after the First World War". The lecture will begin at 5:15pm in lecture hall 13 of the New University.
Three concerts are also open to the public. On 9 August, Barbara Rosnitschek and Peter Schumann will present "Summer Delicacies for Flute and Organ" in the Peterskirche (Plöck 70). Two other events will be held in the Great Hall of the Old University. The "Nachtigallen" Ensemble will present "Pop Music – Glamorous, Capricious and Grandiose" on 16 August. The music series concludes on 23 August with an evening of piano music. Pianist Aurelia Shimkus will play pieces by Skrjabin, Ravel, Debussy and Chopin. All concerts begin at 8pm.
Among the attendees of this year's International Summer School of German Language and Culture are numerous scholarship holders from partner universities in Great Britain, India, Israel, Poland, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also awarded scholarships to approximately 100 students.
