Prof. Rahul Mukherji and Dr. Seyed Hossein Zarhani have co-authored a chapter on "The Pandemic and Competitive Authoritarianism in India." in Democracy, State-Capacity and the Governance of COVID-19 in Asia Oceania, edited by Aurel Croissant and Olli Hellmann. The chapter argues that even though the pandemic helped the BJP propelled National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government to accelerate autocratic propensities, its real impetus came from it ideology and the manner in which the party gained control over the polity after the elections of May 2019.
