How2Heidelberg
Here we have put together some information on how to ‘survive’ in Heidelberg and have a great experience in our beautiful city.
Paying in Germany
In Germany, it is common to pay by debit/credit card or cash. Card payment is possible in all larger stores, all hotels and most restaurants. In a few cases, however, such as in small stores or smaller restaurants, you can only pay in cash. It is not absolutely necessary, but recommended, to have a few Euros in cash with you.
Pharmacies and Medical Care
The medical care in Heidelberg is excellent, with many doctors and a university hospital with an outstanding reputation. The nearest pharmacies are located at the Hauptstrasse close to the Heilig-Geist Kirche (Schwan-Apotheke) and at Bismarckplatz (Hof-Apotheke). Please contact the Conference Office in the Foyer of the New University if you have any questions or require medical assistance.
For minor injuries, we have a first aid kit and bandages available at the Conference Office.
In case of a medical emergency, please immediately contact a member of the conference organization team – we will then call emergency services.
Safety Information
Heidelberg is a very safe city. However, it is recommended to watch out for pickpockets when walking around the city, visiting cafes and restaurants, or shopping. The nearest police station is located at Bismarckplatz.
Tourist Information Centre
One tourist information centre is located at the main railway station and another one in the town hall, Marktplatz 10 (5 minutes' walk from the New University).
Swimming in the Neckar River
Even though it might be really tempting during nice weather and you might see people swimming in the Neckar, the locals strongly advise against swimming in the Neckar. This also includes jumping from bridges or the weir (which is indeed a popular recreational activity in Switzerland as you might recall form the SIG Conference in Zurich).
Where can You spot Locals after a Workday
On a nice day, the Neckarwiese is a very popular spot. Here, you’ll find many locals having a picnic, enjoying a pizza and a beer, or engaging in sports. From here, you also have a fantastic view of Heidelberg Castle in the evening sun. A walk along the Philosophers’ Way is also a favorite activity. The path can be quite steep in some areas, and for the descent via the Snakeway (no worries, there are no snakes here, but the path is very winding ), good footwear is recommended. Sorry, but stilettos are definitely a no-go here. If you prefer a flatter route, you can walk along the Neckar River to the Neckar Terraces at the foot of the Old Bridge. This is also a very popular spot with a great view of the castle and Heidelberg’s Old Town. And, of course, watching the sunset from the castle terrace is a must. And even after years of living in Heidelberg, it’s still something special every time. The cozy atmosphere of the Neuenheim Market invites to linger over a drink or two after work. You will definitely find many locals here. The Untere Strasse is a well-known area with many bars and is particularly popular with a young and young-at-heart crowd looking to party.
Enjoy your stay in Heidelberg.
