Welcome Addresses

Welcome Address Prof. Dr. Silke Hertel

Dear SIG 16 Members, Colleagues, Friends, and Guests,

It is my great pleasure to warmly welcome you all to Heidelberg for the 11th International Biennial Conference of EARLI SIG 16 on Metacognition and Self-Regulated Learning. As a Professor at the Institute of Education Science at Heidelberg University, a long-standing member of the EARLI community, and part of the SIG 16 Coordinators team, I am delighted to host this significant event at Heidelberg University.

The planning for this conference began almost two years ago, and my team and I are incredibly excited that the time has finally come to welcome you all here in Heidelberg. It is an honor to gather such an international group, with around 150 participants from over 20 countries – spanning from Australia to the USA – joining us to share the latest research and discussions on metacognition and self-regulated learning.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you who submitted such outstanding contributions. Your research and insights have shaped an exciting and rich program, and I am confident that these next few days will be filled with inspiring discussions and fruitful exchanges.

We stand at the intersection of transformative education and societal development, and your research provides invaluable insights into how learning, motivation, and self-regulation can be nurtured both in academic settings and beyond – in families, in classrooms, and with the support of digital learning and AI. Together, we can shape the future of education.

Thank you all for being here, for your commitment to research on metacognition and self-regulated learning, and for contributing to what I know will be a stimulating, productive, and inspiring few days. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to collaborate, exchange ideas, and continue pushing the boundaries of our understanding.

Following the motto of Heidelberg University – Semper apertus – may we remain “always open” to new ideas and the pursuit of knowledge.

Welcome to Heidelberg, and I wish us a memorable and successful conference!

Warm regards,

As the EARLI SIG 16 Coordinator, I am delighted to welcome you all to this year’s 11th International Biennial Conference of EARLI SIG 16, themed "Empowering Learners and Shaping the Future of Education". This theme resonates deeply with our SIG 16 focus on metacognition and self-regulated learning, highlighting the importance of empowering learners to take charge of their educational journeys and be prepared for lifelong learning in a rapidly changing world. Additionally, it emphasises the importance of focusing on teachers and their competences and educational technologies to support self-regulated learning.
