Award DAAD Prize 2023 for Amirana scholarship holder Binh Duong Thai

We congratulate our former Amirana scholarship holder Binh Duong Thai, who has been awarded the DAAD Prize for Foreign Students, and are delighted with this well-deserved award! He received the prize, which is awarded by the German Academic Exchange Service and recognizes not only remarkable social commitment but also special academic achievements, for his voluntary work in the project "TRIAPHON – Translating in Medical Emergencies", among other things.

Binh Duong Thai has been studying human medicine at Heidelberg University's Faculty of Medicine since the 2017/2018 winter semester and has "marched through his studies" with outstanding achievements, as Dr. Alexander Au, Head of International Relations at Ruperto Carola, explained at the award ceremony in December. As part of TRIAPHON, Binh Duong Thai, who comes from Vietnam and is currently in his practical year, interprets doctor-patient consultations and also works as an interpreter in refugee shelters.

We were able to accompany and support his development to a certain extent: During his medical studies in Heidelberg, Binh Duong Thai was supported several times with the Amirana Scholarship, which is aimed at medical students from the Global South and is funded 100 percent by donations from alumni and alumnae. It was established by Dr. Mahomed T. Amirana and Dr. Annelene J. Amirana, who both studied medicine in Heidelberg in the 1950s and have lived in the USA for decades. We would like to thank all donors who support Binh Duong Thai and other students on their way to a successful graduation and career start!
