Conference E-Science-Tage: Research Data Management in a Changing World
Press Release No. 20/2025
7 March 2025
Fifth conference addresses challenges in handling scientific data
E-Science-Tage 2025 at Heidelberg University will focus on the challenges of research data management, which arise from rapidly changing infrastructures, technological innovations and geopolitical shifts. The Federal State Initiative for Research Data Management in Baden-Württemberg (bwFDM) and the University Computing Centre, as the local organizer, are inviting participants to the interdisciplinary conference titled “Research Data Management: Challenges in a Changing World”. The hybrid event will take place from 12 to 14 March 2025 in the New University building and will also be accessible via livestream. Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Science, Petra Olschowski, will address the approx. 340 attendees from Germany and abroad via video message at the opening. Rector Prof. Dr Frauke Melchior will welcome the participants.
“The future of research will be significantly shaped by the ability to leverage the potential of research data and derive scientific insights from it. To succeed in times of constant change, our researchers must have the right tools and methodologies to effectively manage and analyze their data. Alongside technical and infrastructural challenges, there is a particular need for a culture of open and collaborative research data management. That’s why national and international collaboration between researchers, computing centers, libraries, and other institutions is crucial for innovation and the future research landscape,” emphasizes Prof. Dr Vincent Heuveline, Managing Director of the Heidelberg University Computing Centre and host of the E-Science-Tage.
The conference is held every two years and is being hosted at Heidelberg University for the fifth time at the invitation of the Computing Centre. In addition to keynote lectures, the E-Science-Tage program features workshops, presentations, a poster session, and various short presentations known as “Lightning Talks”. The keynote speakers include lawyer Peter Hense, who specializes in topics at the intersection of business and technology, such as the implementation of digital innovations. The conference will conclude with a panel discussion where experts discuss specialized personnel and the funding of research data management.
The E-Science-Tage are organized by the bwFDM federal state initiative, which involves Heidelberg University, the University of Konstanz, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The project, funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Arts, promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience on research data management, including through a web-based information platform available at forschungsdaten.info.
