Study “Welcome Day” for Freshers at Universität Heidelberg
17 October 2023
Rector Frauke Melchior greeted newly enrolled students on University Square
At the start of the 2023/2024 winter semester, Heidelberg University staged a “Welcome Day” for its newly enrolled students. Prof. Dr Frauke Melchior, Rector of Heidelberg University, welcomed the freshers − who are beginning their degree courses now or began in the last summer semester – on University Square in the Old Town.
Prof. Dr Eckart Würzner, Mayor of Heidelberg, and Peter Abelmann, Chair of the Constituted Student Body, also brought a greeting for the students. Instrumentalists from the Collegium Musicum under the baton of University Music Director Michael Sekulla provided the musical setting for the event to launch the semester.
The welcome ceremony was followed by an information fair to present the advisory and service organisations of the university, for example the Central Student Advisory Office, the Career Service provided by heiSKILLS − Ruperto Carola’s competence and language centre − and the University Library. These and other facilities accompanying everyday student life presented themselves in the building housing the Triplex-Mensa and in the New University adjoining University Square. And the freshers again received the popular “Bib Bag” , the University Library bag.
The “Welcome Day” took place on 16 October. Before the event started, two activists from “Last Generation” carried out a paint attack on the building of the New University, spray-painting the entrance area in an orange colour.
