ASR A1.2 Room dimensions and movement areas Room dimensions and movement areas

The ASR A1.2 specifies the requirements for the dimensions of work spaces and movement areas.

The floor area for work rooms must not be less than 8 m² (for the first workstation) and needs to increase in size by 6 m² for each additional workstation. Each workstation must have a free movement area of at least 1.5 m².

Movement areas are connected, unobstructed floor areas at the workplace that are necessary to enable employees to change working positions and / or make compensatory movements during their work.

Depending on the floor area, the clear room height must be as follows:

  • up to 50 m² --> at least 2.50 m
  • more than 50 m² --> at least 2.75 m
  • more than 100 m² --> at least 3.00 m
  • more than 2000 m² --> at least 3.25 m

Deviations are possible in justified individual cases.

Workrooms must be set up in such a way that the free air space (not reduced by the volume of built-in items) for each employee who is constantly present is at least:

  • 12 m³ for predominantly sedentary work,
  • 15 m³ for predominantly non-sedentary work and
  • 18 m³ for heavy physical work.

The ASR A1.2 provides concrete implementation examples for the design of workplaces in office spaces:

  1. Cell office / individual office: Example of a cell office (individual offices arranged along the face of the building and accessible via a shared corridor) each with a sitting /standing work table, a roll container at work table height and a sliding door cupboard - space required per work station: 8.68 m²
  2. Cell office / individual office: Example of today's usual office work (combination of screen work and "classic" office work) - space required per work station: 12.18 m²
  3. Two-person office: Example of a two-person office each with a sitting / standing work table, a roll container at work table height, shelves and sliding door cupboards - space required per work station: 10.12 m²
  4. Three-person office: In this example, there was a need to equip a two-person office with a third workstation. By replacing old CRT monitors with modern LCD screens, the workstation depth could be reduced from 1000 to 800 mm. Advancing digitilization can also help making space-consuming double-door cabinets obsolete - space requirement per workstation: 9.54 m²
  5. The equipment in this group office is limited to a work table with a free-form top, a roll container at the work table, a horizontal roller shutter cabinet and sliding door cabinets for shared use - space requirement per workstation: 10.70 m²
  6. Combination office: The combination office in this example takes up a lot of floor space per workstation, but the "individual" space requirement per individual office cell (work table, roll container, sliding door cabinet) is relatively small - space requirement per workstation: 8.91 m²
  7. In this example of an open-plan office, the workstations are equipped with work tables, roll containers, personal sliding door cabinets and sliding door cabinets for shared use. In addition, functional areas such as meeting rooms, tea kitchens and communication rooms are taken into account - space requirement per workstation: 16.18 m²
