    Hsu (Taiwanese-Lebanese model Rima Zeidan, who won Best New Performer at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards in 2018) moves from Hong Kong to Taipei alone, with only her pet parrot for company. There, she continually receives phone calls asking for a mysterious man called Johnny. She gradually bonds with her landlady’s autistic son, Lee (Yuan Huang), and a local builder Feng (Lawrence Ko) working for the landlady and living in his car. As time goes by, their lives intersect and become entangled in new, complicated ways. Feng and Hsu appear on the verge of finding each other romantically, though none of the characters seems to be able to find exactly what is missing, be it in themselves or each other…

    About Huang Xi

    Born in 1975 in Taipei, Taiwan, director Huang Xi 黃熙 graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA degree. She worked with director HOU Hsiao-hsien who encouraged her in screenwriting. She was involved in the makings of Goodbye South Goodbye, The Assassin, and House (released by Taiwan Public Television). The visual style of Huang Xi’s debut film, Missing Johnny, bears resemblance to the once-prominent New Wave movement established by his countrymen Hou Hsiao-hsien (the film’s executive producer here) and Tsai Ming-Liang, with long takes and subtle pans that explore space and give a sense of the characters’ experience of alienation and dislocation in a bustling modern Taipei.

    All Dates of the Event 'Taiwan Lecture Series'

    This year’s “Taiwan Lecture Series” is devoted to questioning “Sinophone Authenticities” from cross-sectional perspectives. Approaching the topic “In Search for Home – Authenticity and Chineseness in Taiwan and the Sinophone World”, it will consist of four sections, and offer views from art, politics, literature and gender studies. It will begin with a section “Contesting Home – Artistic Renderings” with Taiwan Sound and Visual Artist FENG Chi-han (Taiwan/Hong Kong), a second section on “Post-Chineseness in Taiwan Politics” with SHIH Chih-yu (National Taiwan University), a third on “Travel Writing and Taiwan Identities” with LIN Shu-hui (National Taiwan Normal University), and a last section on “Homing Feminism in the Sinophone World” with Paola ZAMPERINI (Northwestern University).
