Field of Focus III - Funded Projects ePolyGlott

Multilingual Historic Encyclopedias with (clerical) Slavic Parts as Cultural Heritage in the Digital Modern Age

Project leader

Prof. Dr. Irina Podtergera

The aim of the project was to provide the impetus for a new international interdisciplinary initiative in the digital humanities. The focus lay on the development and evaluation of digital resources in order to enable access to premodern manuscripts of Greek–Latin dictionaries with a (Church) Slavonic component. Preliminary work has been conducted on a multilingual dictionary portal for digitalized manuscripts and their annotated transcripts in TEI/XML.

The main focus was the analysis of processed data and the development of the technical infrastructure, which would enable efficient and flexible execution of the work within this initiative, which has been applied for to the DFG.

During the development of the technical infrastructure, the access structure, that is, the design- and organizing principles of the hypertext dictionary, was conceived and the architecture of the dictionary portal outlined. A central precondition for this was the investigation of macro- and microstructures of those dictionaries to be included in the portal. In addition, the OCR tool Transkribus was trained on sources from the project.

As a result, a bilateral interdisciplinary application has been submitted to the DFG for a 3-year-long project in response to the call for proposals “RFBR-DFG Cooperation: Possibility for Joint German-Russian Research Projects”.
