Course Content

Students of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Byzantine Archaeology and Art History gain an overview of the central monuments, findings and types of objects dating from the late Antique and early Byzantine periods. They gain initial insight into the objective and methodological foundations of Byzantine archaeology and art history.

Course Structure

The degree programme may also be studied as a minor subject in combination with a major subject. Where Byzantine Archaeology and Art History is studied as a minor subject, students complete the following modules: 

  • Basic module 1 (first and second semester): Introduction and Basic Knowledge 
  • Foundation module 2 or 3 (third and fourth semester): Architecture and Settlement Archaeology I or Visual Culture I  
  • Specialised module 4 or 5 (fourth and fifth semester): Architecture and Settlement Archaeology II or Visual Culture II
