Course Content
Building on the Bachelor’s degree programme 50% in Chemistry with a teaching degree option, the specialised knowledge acquired will be expanded and strengthened. Further focus is placed on specialised didactics and chemistry experiments to be used in schools.
Graduates of the Chemistry degree programme component will have gained competencies that include the following:
- possession of practicable specialist knowledge in chemistry that allows them to comprehend current research in chemistry.
- the ability fo record and evaluate information about chemistry in the context of its application and the interrelationships that exist within chemistry.
- the ability to identify key issues that allow them to structure the different areas of chemistry, to use crosslinking to connect these areas, and to make these relevant for school chemistry and its development.
- knowledge of essential working and information-gathering methods in chemistry and guidelines for safe experimentation.
- possession of practicable didactic knowledge of chemistry on the basis of up-to-date research, especially fundamental knowledge of the findings from chemistry-related teaching-learning research.
- the ability, on the basis of their specialised knowledge, to design and evaluate curriculum concepts and media in the area of chemistry.
- possession of practicable specialised and didactic knowledge of chemistry that enables them, as educators, to design teaching, learning, and educational processes in chemistry.
Course Structure
The degree programme component in Chemistry includes in-depth lectures and courses in the areas of Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. From a large number of lecture cycles, two lectures may be selected, according to students’ individual interests, that will allow them to acquire in-depth knowledge of research-related chemistry topics. In two modules, a combination of specialised didactics will be provided, including specialised topics and practical work in the areas of Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. During the practical semester, the emphasis will be on digital teaching-learning formats. In the blended modules and during the practical semester, there is close collaboration between the Chemistry Department and upper-level secondary school (‘Gymnasium’) teachers, the State Seminar for Didactics and Teacher Training and the Heidelberg University of Education.
Sample course schedules and detailed descriptions of the individual modules may be found in the module handbook of the degree programme component in Chemistry.
