Course Content

The dentistry degree programme in Heidelberg (HeiCuDent) is a consistently practice- and patient-oriented course of studies. It is based on a sound scientific education, which is supplemented by practical courses during the course of studies.

You will start out by acquiring the scientific and medical basics necessary for your work with patients. The pre-clinical science courses follow a block structure and are characterised by interdisciplinary courses and examinations. A deep insight into the profession of dentistry will be provided at an early stage as well. You will have the opportunity to identify your interests and develop and consolidate your skills and abilities through numerous assistantships and work shadowing placements. There will be tutors available to assist you.

Practical dentistry training on dental phantom units commences in the fourth semester, which is then detailed in full-time courses in academic semesters 5 and 6. You will learn the various methods of dentistry treatment and surgical techniques. You will also be introduced to the techniques of taking a medical history, making a diagnosis and prognosis, and defining a treatment plan in preparation for your own patient treatment. There is a strong emphasis on teaching communication skills.

An interest in scientific subjects, enjoyment of teamwork and communication, an ability to deal with people in an empathetic and responsible manner as well as manual dexterity and aesthetic sensitivity are essential for successfully completing a degree in dentistry.
