Course Content

The basic Master's degree programme with English as a supplementary subject (major subject) consists of the scholarly study of the English language (linguistics) and literature (literary studies), cultural studies, thorough practical language training, and instruction in subject-specific didactics.

The specialised curriculum is divided equally between English literature and linguistics.
On the basis of relevant theory and methodology, a range of pertinent research-related academic topics and current research studies will be studied and discussed, both orally and in writing.

The instruction in subject-specific didactics establishes and expands upon the basic fundamentals of bilingual learning and teaching, intercultural learning, language work, the use of media in the classroom, and the basics of school organisation.
In addition, the interplay between English-language studies, didactics, and pedagogy will be examined and reflected upon.

Course Structure

In the initial orientation semesters, introductory courses in linguistics, literary studies and phonetics provide students with subject-specific fundamental skills and knowledge. These are followed by more specialised modules in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies, consisting of lectures and seminars that may be selected by students in accordance with their needs and preferences from a wide range of modules. These specialised modules are flanked by four practical language courses: Tense and Aspect, Essential Skills for Writing, Structure and Idiom, Advanced English in Use. At this point in their studies, it is recommended that students participate in a study abroad programme. After completion of these courses, students have a broad overview of the scientific sub-disciplines of English studies and are familiar with various methodological approaches. The focus seminar and the major seminars provide a connection to research, conveying to students the fundamentals of preparing a scientific thesis: the Master’s thesis. During the final phase of study, attendance at the didactic seminars, one of which should be combined with a major seminar, is also recommended. The degree programme for the supplementary subject concludes with the Master’s thesis in the major subject. The oral examination that is normally mandatory in the Master of Education programme is not required.

English Studies can be studied as a subject comprising 120 credits (standard period of study 4 semesters).
