Course Content
The degree programme entails analysis of the literary, linguistic and cultural phenomena which have arisen as a result of contact across territorial, ethnic, political and religious boundaries within the francophone linguistic and cultural area.
The degree course therefore focuses on variants of French language and culture, as well as literary traditions. The degree programme takes an integral perspective to consider the entirety of the world’s francophone territories; from France to francophone parts of Africa, to Québec. During the course of study, an emphasis is placed on literary, cultural and linguistic expressions of francophone culture and transcultural studies which have arisen as a result of transcultural contact phenomena within the francophone area.
In order to embark on the Master’s degree programme, students must have successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree in a philological or cultural subject. During the degree programme, students will strengthen their French language proficiency and will gain language skills in an additional Romance language.
Course Structure
During the first three semesters of the degree programme, students develop their knowledge and skills in relation to French language, francophone literature and cultural studies. From the third academic semester, which is spent abroad at a partner university, students are able to individually weight their studies in these three different areas. Alternatively, students may spend the third academic semester completing a work placement which is relevant to the content of the degree programme, or which reflects elements of academia.
Remarks and explanations (in particular regarding abbreviations) can be found in the module handbook.
The Master’s degree programme in French/Transcultural studies can also be studied as a subsidiary subject accounting for 20 CP.
