Course Content

The Master of Education in Greek (Classical philology: Greek studies) focusses on the texts of Ancient Greece. Students build on their knowledge of Greek language and literature, as gained in the preceding Bachelor’s degree programme. They improve their translation and interpretation skills through intensive reading and analysis of Greek texts, and consolidate their knowledge of the interrelationships between literary and historical phenomena. In addition, they develop and reflect on their knowledge of methods and theories associated with literary studies and linguistics, as gained in the Bachelor’s degree programme. Students also learn to apply these methods and theories to perform independent work that conforms to academic standards, and to gain an overview of the interrelationships within the field of Greek studies.

Students in the Master of Education in classical philology: Greek studies, draw on their specialist subject knowledge to analyse topics in view of didactic principles, and prepare these appropriately for delivery in the classroom. Graduates are able to present and discuss Antique texts in light of modern perspectives and reflections. Students also gain initial practical teaching experience, acquire the people skills required for work in a school environment, and reflect on the demands and challenges of a career in teaching.

Course Structure

The Master of Education in classical philology: Greek studies has a standard duration of four semester and is structured in a very similar way to the polyvalent Bachelor’s degree programme. The degree programme includes advanced-level practical translation and language courses, as well as seminars, lectures and practice classes in specialised didactics. The degree programme consists of compulsory modules and elective modules. Students must complete the modules that focus on improving their translation and interpretation skills (language and translation practice classes, main seminars, lectures) and those that cover specialised didactic skills. The so-called “blended module” gives students the opportunity to select a subject specific module (either a lecture or Stil IV or translation and interpretation). A practice class in specialised didactics is taken alongside this. The specialism which a student selects for the blended module is not reflected in the compulsory modules. Alongside the blended module, students attend a compulsory lecture in advanced specialised didactics. Students must also complete a practical semester in a school. It is recommended that students use the second or third  semester for this purpose. The practical semester is accompanied by a seminar focussing on specialised didactics. The degree programme culminates in the Master's thesis, which may be completed in one of the two chosen subjects or in education studies.
