Course Content

The focus of the Master’s degree programme Master of Education Classical Philology: Latin studies is the study of traditional ancient texts in the Latin language.  In this programme, students increase their knowledge of Latin language and literature previously acquired in the Bachelor’s programme: They improve their translation and interpretation skills through intensive reading and analysis of Latin texts and consolidate knowledge of literary and historical relationships. In addition, they enhance and reflect on their knowledge of methods and theories associated with literary studies and linguistics. Students also learn to apply these methods and theories, to perform independent work that conforms to academic standards and to gain an overview of the interrelationships between the various aspects of Latin studies.

Based on their in-depth specialised knowledge, students in the Master of Education Classical Philology: Latin studies, also learn to analyse topics from the perspective of didactics and to prepare these appropriately for the classroom.  They are able to present and discuss modern perspectives on reflection and imagination that are grounded in antique texts. Additionally, students gain first practical teaching experience, acquire the relevant social skills required for work in schools and reflect on the job’s demands and challenges.

Course Structure

The structure of the four-semester Master of Education in Classical Philology: Latin studies follows the structure of the previously completed polyvalent BA programme:  Its components include advanced-level practical translation and language courses as well as seminars, lectures and practice classes in specialised didactics. The degree programme consists of compulsory modules and elective modules. Students must complete the modules that focus on improving their translation and interpretation skills (language and translation practice classes, main seminars, lectures) and those that convey specialised didactic competencies. In addition to the mandatory blended module, which consists of a literary studies lecture and an accompanying specialised didactics practice class, students can also select a further area of didactic specialisation: This specialist course is accompanied by a specialised didactics seminar that must be taken in the same semester (e.g., a specialised didactics practice class to accompany a lecture, a specialised didactics practice class to accompany the course “Übersetzung und Interpretation” [translation and interpretation], a specialised didactics practice class to accompany the style practice classes). The practical semester in a school (recommended for the 2nd or 3rd semester) is a fixed component of the academic programme and is accompanied by a specialised didactics seminar.  The degree programme culminates in the Master's thesis that may be completed in one of the two chosen subjects or in Education Studies.
