The Latin Studies degree programme, more precisely described as Latin Philology, is devoted to the study of Latin texts that have been handed down from antiquity, including the examination of these in terms of their linguistic-literary form as well as their placement within a historical-cultural context.

Course Content
The objective of Latin Studies is the study of surviving ancient Latin texts. During the course of the degree programme, students will be introduced to the Latin language and the entire spectrum of Latin-language literature. Through the intensive study of these texts, they will learn methods for translating and interpreting Latin texts while at the same time gaining an overview of literary/historical interrelationships. In addition, students will be introduced to core literary studies and linguistics theory and methods and will learn how to effectively apply these.
On the basis of their in-depth subject knowledge, students in the Master of Education degree programme in Classical Philology: Latin Studies also gain the ability to to analyse individual subject areas from a didactical perspective and to adapt them for effective classroom instruction. Drawing on these ancient texts, they are able to illustrate the foundations of present-day reflection and imagination and to communicate them to others.
Course Structure
In the Extension Subjects Master’s degree programme, Latin Studies may be studied as either a major or a minor subject. The study programme includes language and translation tutorials that build on each other in terms of their levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced) as well as seminars and lectures for practising interpretation methods and subject-related didactic exercises. The degree programme includes both compulsory and elective modules. Students are required to complete all modules that provide training in translation and interpretation skills (language and translation tutorials, seminars, lectures) and impart specialised didactic competence. In addition to a compulsory blended module, consisting of a literary studies lecture and an accompanying specialised didactics tutorial, students may select a further specialisation in advanced subject-specific didactics. Theoretical courses are accompanied by specialised didactics seminars (e.g. subject-specific didactics tutorials are tied to lectures, such as the specialised didactics tutorial that accompanies the “Translation and Interpretation” course). And finally, the elective module gives students an opportunity to attend courses from closely related fields, such as ancient history or archaeology. The Master’s degree programme concludes with the Master’s thesis.
Latin Studies can be studied as a subject comprising 90 credits (standard period of study 3 semesters) or as a subject comprising 120 credits (standard period of study 4 semesters).
