Course Content
This academic programme is based on a holistic understanding of the Iberian and Latin American cultural areas, which include Spain, Portugal, Hispanic America and Brazil. Consequently, the degree programme focusses on these linguistic and cultural interweavings across Ibero-America as well as literary traditions.
It is also concerned with contact phenomena that arise within linguistic and cultural regions across territorial, ethnic, political or religious boundaries. The focus lies on those areas of Hispanic and Lusitanian Literary and Cultural Studies, Linguistics, and Transcultural Studies that share a connection with transcultural contact phenomena in Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula, and between Europe and Latin America.
The successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree programme in a philological or cultural subject is a prerequisite for this degree programme. The programme itself is concerned with the literary, linguistic and cultural phenomena.

The Master’s degree programme Ibero-American Studies. Contact – Theories and Methods may also be studied as a minor subject accounting for 20 CP.
When taken as a major, the programme cannot be combined with a minor subject.
International version
The Master’s degree programme “Ibero-American studies. Contact – Theories and methods” can also be studied in an international version. The international double degree version is offered in collaboration with the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile. The first year of study will take place at Heidelberg University and the second year of study at the Universidad de Chile. The first year will comprise an interdisciplinary approach to contact phenomena at Heidelberg University, while the second year is for specialising in one of the three disciplines of “Magíster en Literatura”, “Magíster en Estudios Latinoamericanos”, or “Magíster en Lingüística (con menciones)” at the Universidad de Chile.
In the double-degree version, the Chilean and German perspectives on matters of language, literature, and cultural contact as well as perspectives of transculturalism in hispanophonic and lusophonic regions will supplement each other. The study programme of the international course variant is characterised by a pronounced proximity to research, profiting from the interdisciplinary and international networking with the Heidelberg Centre for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) and the various university-internal and -external research centres, such as the European Linguistics Centre (Europäisches Zentrum für Sprachwissenschaften; EZS). Students in the double degree variant will be part of a panromanic Master’s cohort that is to independently organise a scientific conference (forum) in the scope of their Master’s programme.
Acquisition of a double degree from two universities of international renown offers familiarity with two university and science contexts, thus detailing the theoretically acquired transcultural skills from an application-oriented perspective. Beyond this, the degree programme supplements its research orientation by acquisition of or specialisation in the Portuguese language and the strongly interdisciplinary education in literature, linguistic, and cultural-theoretical issues to open up demanding vocational perspectives outside of the university as well.
