Startup Thesis

You can put the research from your thesis directly into practice, learn the basics of entrepreneurship and business model development at the same time and if you want to build a start-up from your thesis now or in the future, you have already taken the first step.

hei_INNOVATION offers Bachelor's and Master's students at Heidelberg University the opportunity to develop a business concept and a business model for a start-up based on their research-based Bachelor's or Master's thesis. Students receive:

  • a certificate for this additional output and learnings
  • personalised advice from hei_INNOVATION
  • basic knowledge on the topic of entrepreneurship through participation in modules in the field of Entrepreneurial Skills
  • the basis for an EXIST start-up grant
  • the opportunity to put your Bachelor's or Master's thesis directly into practice

Composition of the Startup Thesis

Theoretical part:

  • Research paper (Bachelor's or Master's thesis) supervised by the chair; scope of the paper and content requirements are specified by the chair
       

Practical part:

  • Acquisition of an additional qualification through the development of a business concept based on the Master's thesis
  • Practical implementation of your research in the form of a start-up case concept

Prerequisites

  • At least three consulting hours in which the business model is discussed, the pitch is worked out and practised and the financial structure is discussed
  • Conception of the product-market fit
  • Final presentation (10 minutes)
       

If no course from the Entrepreneurial Skills Module has been attended:

  • Attend the Entrepreneurship for Beginners 2 course, which is worth 3 ECTS and covers the following topics: 
    • Business Model Canvas,
    • Unique Selling Point (USP)
    • Personas und Target Group Definition
    • Minimum Viable Product (MVP) 
    • Marketing conception
    • Financial planning
  • OR attendance of other Entrepreneurial Skills Modules with a comparable number of ECTS credits (at least 3 ECTS credits)
