History of the Mediterranean, particularly of the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages; transcultural entanglements; history of religious orders; religious violence; German-Spanish relations.
Curriculum vitae:
Born 1962 in Melbourne, Australia, he studied history, Hispanic studies, art history, and English studies in Berlin and Madrid. In 1995 he received his Doctorate at the Friedrich-Meinecke-Institute of the Free University of Berlin. From 1995 to 1998 he was a research assistant and assistant lecturer there. From 1998 to 2005 he was Academic Councillor / Senior Councillor at the Chair for the History of the Middle Ages at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2005 to 2013 he was Professor for the History of the Middle Ages with special regard to the Late Middle Ages at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Since October 2013 he is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Heidelberg.
Co-editor of the "Zeitschrift für Historische Forschung" (since 2009). Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the journals "Anuario de Estudios Medievales" (since 2002), “Imago Temporis”, “Aragón en la Edad Media” and “Medievalismo” (since 2008), “Potestas” (since 2009), “Edad Media. Revista de Historia” (since 2010), “Espacio – Tiempo – Forma” (since 2014), “Revue Mabillon” (since 2016), “En la España Medieval” (since 2017), “De Medio Aevo” (since 2018), “Intus-Legere Historia” (since 2019), “Al-Masāq” (since 2020). Since 2008: Membre correspondent of the Humanities Section of the Catalan Academy of Sciences (Institut d’Estudis Catalans). 2008–2013: Board member of the Käte Hamburger Centre for Research Study in the Humanities "Dynamiken der Religionsgeschichte zwischen Asien und Europa" (Ruhr-Universität Bochum). Since 2009 member, since 2019 chairman of the Konstanzer Arbeitskreis für Mittelalterliche Geschichte. 2009–2013. Director of the Centre for Mediterranean Studies (Ruhr-Universität Bochum). 2011–2019: Member of the Advisory Board of the German Historical Institute, Rome (2016–2019: Chairman of the Advisory Board). 2013–2017 President of the "Société Internationale des Historiens de la Méditerranée". 2017–2019: Co-Director of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" (University of Heidelberg), since 2017: Co-Director of the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (University of Heidelberg). Since 2018: Member of the Humanities Panel of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Co-director of the Heidelberg Centre for Ibero-American Studies (since 2019). Member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2020.
