Jubilee 100 years DAAD: We want your memories!

This year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is celebrating its 100th birthday - and the approximately three million students and academics worldwide who have studied or researched in another country with DAAD funding include many Heidelberg alumni! Do you have any particularly beautiful, emotional, unusual or funny memories of your DAAD stay in Heidelberg? Or are you one of the Heidelberg alumni who spent some time abroad on a DAAD scholarship and had an unforgettable time there? Then share your memories with us!

Tell us in a short text (maximum 2,000 characters including spaces!) and preferably with a suitable photo what made your stay abroad so unforgettable and send it by August 31 to: service@alumni.uni-heidelberg.de Or do you simply have a particularly funny or beautiful photo from your DAAD time that you would like to share with us?Then send it to us with a short explanation of what or who is in it. We will publish the best submissions in our HAIlife magazine at the end of the year.

In Heidelberg, we have a very special connection to the DAAD, because this is where it all began: during a longer stay in the USA in 1922, Heidelberg student Carl Joachim Friedrich developed the idea of an organized student exchange and, after his return, founded a Political Science Exchange Office, which was affiliated to the Institute for Social and Political Sciences under the direction of his doctoral supervisor Alfred Weber. This gave rise to the Academic Exchange Service e.V. (AAD), which was officially founded in Heidelberg on January 13, 1925 with Alfred Weber as its first chairman - the birth of today's DAAD!
