Scholarship holders present their favourite place in Heidelberg and explain why it means so much to them. Maybe you would also like to visit this place in the future.

Said completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in the summer semester 2024. He was a one of the first scholarship holders of the Hans-Peter Wild Talent Scholarships. To leave the stress of everyday life behind, he loves going into nature.

Wieblinger Wehr

You are walking down a trail bound by bushes, trees, and flowers, past the weir. You take the stairs down to the raised riverbank and sit on the edge. Perhaps you’ve brought a friend and a small picnic of bread, cheese and lemonade. While sitting there enjoying your meal, you look over the Neckar and onto Bergheim. You see lots of houses, an old industrial-looking chimney, and a few cranes. It is a rather urban landscape, in contrast to the pretty, green, albeit very narrow, stretch of nature you’ve just passed through. The river seems to be a boundary between these two worlds or, with the footbridge nearby, more like a threshold. From time to time, you can see the contents of these two worlds invading this threshold. On the one hand, you see cargo riverboats passing the weir via the canal right in front of you. On the other hand, you see swans swimming in the canal, young people jumping into the water from the footbridge, and in the evenings, bats swirling over the water.

However, the most valuable time I have spent at this riverbank is with friends, especially those who appreciate all the little wonders of nature: the various plants growing, the clouds moving through the sky, or little bugs and spiders crawling over the ground. For me personally, sitting at this riverbank and existing between these two worlds gives me a sense of scale, helps me unwind, and ultimately allows me to reflect and see things from a different perspective. Besides, it is easily accessible from the campus or Jahnstraße and often offers beautiful sunsets if you ever decide to visit after uni.
