Sonya Dutton receives funding from the Heidelberg Alumni U.S. initiative

The American master’s student Sonya Dutton has received the Heidelberg Alumni U.S. (HAUS) Scholarship – a grant from Heidelberg University’s alumni initiative in the United States. The 22-year-old, who is studying physics at Ruperto Carola, is set to receive 7,000 dollars in funding. As part of a small ceremony, the university’s Rector, Prof. Dr Frauke Melchior, and President of the American Alumni Network, Kathleen Lance, presented the scholarship, which was awarded for the 13th time.

HAUS Scholarship for Sonya Dutton

“I am delighted to be able to present this scholarship on behalf of HAUS to such an outstanding candidate,” explained Kathleen Lance at the ceremony, stating that the young student’s outstanding application essay transported her to the laboratories of the European research center CERN from the very first line. During a semester abroad at the University of Geneva, Sonya Dutton was the only bachelor’s student invited to conduct research in the CERN Collinear Laser Spectroscopy working group. This went on to serve as the subject of her application for the HAUS Scholarship.

This summer, Sonya Dutton earned a bachelor’s degree in physics at Williams College in Massachusetts. “I applied to master’s programs at a number of European universities – and Heidelberg University, being renowned in the field of nuclear physics, was my first choice,” says the student, delighted with both the scholarship and her admission to the university.

The HAUS Scholarship

The HAUS Scholarship is financed through donations from alumni living in the United States. It is aimed at students residing in the States who want to transfer to Heidelberg University, either for a semester abroad or for the entirety of their studies. For bachelor’s students, financial support amounts to 4,500 dollars, while master’s students receive 7,000 dollars. The scholarships are initially awarded for one semester, with the option of being extended for an additional semester.
