University Jens Andreas Meinen Becomes New Kanzler of Heidelberg University

University Council and Senate elected the business management and public administration specialist as future head of administration at Ruperto Carola
The University Council and the Senate of Heidelberg University have elected a new Kanzler for Ruperto Carola. In a joint meeting on 14 March 2024 the members of the two bodies voted for Jens Andreas Meinen. As a member of the Rectorate, with a background in business management and public administration, he will in future head Heidelberg University’s administration. He will be appointed by the state premier of Baden-Württemberg. Jens Andreas Meinen’s six-year term of office starts on 1 September this year. At present, the 55-year-old is Chancellor of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Jens Andreas Meinen studied at the Fachhochschule für Verwaltung und Rechtspflege Hildesheim. In parallel with his subsequent studies in economics from the Gesamthochschule Hagen, he worked in various functions for the district government of Weser-Ems. After almost four years of employment at the Lower Saxony Water Management and Coastal Defence Agency, Jens Andreas Meinen headed the Finance Division of Osnabrück University from 2002 to 2009. He served as Head of Administration at Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences (2009 to 2013) and as Chancellor of FH Münster University of Applied Sciences (2013 to 2019), before transferring in the same capacity to the University of Duisburg-Essen in August 2019.
In assuming the office of Kanzler, Jens Andreas Meinen becomes the head of the university administration and chief financial officer of Heidelberg University. As a full-time member of the Rectorate for business and personnel management, he is involved in the university’s strategic decision-making processes and responsible for implementing them through the administration.
