Alexander von Humboldt Foundation presents Humboldt Professor Francisco Moreno-Fernández in film portrait

How do culture, politics, demography or also subjective perceptions of identity influence linguistic dynamics and differentiations? Relations between language and society are the main focus of investigations by Prof. Dr Francisco Moreno-Fernández, presented now by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in a film portrait. The holder of a highly endowed Humboldt professorship, the linguist teaches and does his research at Heidelberg University. There he also heads the new, interdisciplinary Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS).

A sociolinguist, Prof. Moreno-Fernández is particularly concerned with the Spanish-speaking communities in Latin America, Europe and the USA. One focus of his research deals with migration movements and their role in the complex formation and development of linguistic, social and cultural areas. This language research in connection with history, geography and sociology is illustrated in the film “Language as a Mirror of Society” made by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Santiago de Chile and Heidelberg.

The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship is the most highly endowed research prize in Germany and brings top international researchers to German universities. Eligible for nomination for the professorship are researchers from abroad with a worldwide leading position in their field. The prize money is meant for financing the first five years. Francisco Moreno-Fernández is the Humboldt award-winner for 2020.
