Marsilius Kolleg Lecture: On the Future of the Global University

24 March 2025

American academic Mark C. Elliott to speak on the challenges of international collaboration in research

Geopolitical upheavals, shocks like the Covid pandemic and a growing skepticism about globalization are posing new challenges to cross-border exchange in research. On the invitation of the Marsilius Kolleg, historian Prof. Dr Mark C. Elliott is to give a lecture at Heidelberg University on the prospects for scholarly internationalization. During the event on 26 March 2025, Prof. Elliott, who is responsible at Harvard University (United States) for the university’s international affairs, will explore how, in view of complex dynamics, global networks in research and teaching might continue to develop, and what options are available for shaping them.

Mark C. Elliott is Vice Provost of International Affairs at Harvard University. He holds a professorship of Chinese and Inner Asian History. The Marsilius Kolleg at Heidelberg University focuses on bringing together selected researchers from various scholarly cultures, thereby fostering research-related dialogue between the humanities, law and social sciences, on the one hand, and the natural, engineering and life sciences, on the other.

The lecture (in English), entitled “Thoughts on the Future of the Global University” is taking place in the lecture hall of the Marsilius Kolleg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 130.1, and will begin at 5pm.
