Ranking Universität Heidelberg: Top Placings for Life Sciences and Medicine

THE subject ranking also puts Law, Physical Sciences and Humanities in strong positions

Life Sciences and Medicine at Heidelberg University have gained top placings in rankings by subject group when compared across Germany and likewise at the international level. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025 they come second in Germany; internationally they rank 36th (Life Sciences) and 38th (Medicine).

The Physical Sciences also display an outstanding performance. In the international ranking they have gone up by three places and are now ranked 39th; in Germany they are in third place, one up from fourth place in the previous year. Not ranked before, Law at Heidelberg University is now found in the Top 50 of its subject group. Worldwide on place 50, it takes third place at the national level. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject lists the Arts and Humanities in 37th place internationally; they take fifth position in the evaluation across Germany. 

In the Life Sciences, Heidelberg University ranks second nationally – behind the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and ahead of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU); internationally the two Munich universities are found at position 34 (TMU) and 43 (LMU). With Medicine, which the THE subject ranking calls Medical and Health, Ruperto Carola is ranked below Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (placed 32nd internationally) and ahead of LMU, which is positioned 45th at the international level. 

In the overall evaluation of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Heidelberg University – at position 47 – is among the Top 50 universities worldwide and, after TUM and LMU, is one of the three best universities in Germany. 18 different indicators are employed for the ranking, which are summarized in five university performance areas. The criteria of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject correspond to those of the overall THE ranking but are weighted differently for each subject group. The fields of teaching, research environment and research quality receive greater consideration than the areas of international outlook and industry.
