EU Research & Innovation Programme 2021 – 2027 Horizon Europe

On January 1, 2021, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation “Horizon Europe” was launched. Horizon Europe is the follow-up programme to Horizon 2020 and will run until December 31, 2027.

 

Horizon Europe is organized into three pillars:

Pillar I: Excellent Science

Pillar I “Excellent Science” includes programmes for open-topic (individual) funding:

  • European Research Council (ERC)
  • Marie Skłodowska-Curie-Actions (MSCA)
  • Research infrastructures

Pillar IIGlobal Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness

Pillar II “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness” brings the former 13 topics of Horizon 2020 together into six clusters, which are intended to help address the major societal challenges:

  • Health
  • Culture, creativity and inclusive society
  • Civil security for society
  • Digital, industry and space
  • Climate, energy and mobility
  • Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment

Pillar III: Innovative Europe

Innovation-related funding measures are located in Pillar III “Innovative Europe”: 

  • European Innovation Council (EIC)
  • European Innovation Ecosystems
  • European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).


The Heidelberg Research Service of the Research Division (D6) supports researchers at Heidelberg University in the application and project management of research projects within the framework of Horizon Europe:

Horizon Europe: Work Programme & Calls for Proposals

The Work Programme of Horizon Europe 2023-2024 has been published on the European Commission's Funding & Tenders Portal. The first calls for proposals will open in December 2022.

Horizon Europe Programme Guide

The European Commission has published a Programme Guide on Horizon Europe. The guide provides background information on the program principles and explanations of important terms such as „Open Science“ or the „Do no significant harm“ principle.

EU Coordinator Support

The Heidelberg Research Service offers an EU Coordinator Support that supports with the coordination of EU joint research applications and projects at Heidelberg University. The service includes communication and organisation within the consortium, project management and reporting to the EU.

ERC Grants

The European Research Council (ERC) supports top researchers in the advancement of basic research and visionary projects and the development of new interdisciplinary fields of knowledge. Researchers from Heidelberg University have been awarded 69 ERC Grants in total since 2008.

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships

The goal of MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility.

MSCA Doctoral Networks

MSCA Doctoral Networks implement doctoral programmes through partnerships of organisations from different sectors across Europe and beyond. The aim of Doctoral Networks is to train creative, entrepreneurial, innovative and resilient doctoral candidates, able to face current and future challenges.
