Course Content
The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematics is to convey a basic education in mathematics. Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree programme are able to understand and apply mathematical models in science and business. In addition to a subject-specific education, the academic programme also helps students improve their ability to analyse and solve problems, communicate and subsequently improves their resilience. Students who wish to transition into the job market after they graduate from the Bachelor’s programme can organise their academic programme in such a way that they learn about the fundamental mathematical aspects of the desired career. On the other hand, it is naturally also possible to choose a more scientific orientation in the academic programme if students wish to enrol in a subsequent Master’s degree programme.
Course Structure
The Bachelor’s degree programme in Mathematics conveys a basic education in mathematics and enables students to define an individual profile thanks to the numerous electives.
The academic programme consists of the following:
- Mathematics
- Application area
- Interdisciplinary skills
- Bachelor's thesis
The academic programme in Mathematics is divided into compulsory, compulsory elective and elective courses. Students must complete all compulsory modules. These consists mainly of introductory courses in the respective sud-domains of mathematics. In the compulsory elective courses, students must complete four modules from three different areas of compulsory elective courses (at least one per module). Two modules must be selected from the range of electives. These can be freely selected.
There are a range of subjects which students may select as a so-called “application area”. These include Computer Science, Economics as well as Biosciences, Philosophy, Psychology and others.
Students gain a proportion of credits for Interdisciplinary Skills via completion of the compulsory modules. Further credits are gained by the attendance of lectures and seminars in another subject area offered by the university, or via the completion of additional, selected modules in the field of Mathematics.
